Akenfield

Bungay Film Club

Many thanks for turning out in such numbers for our last film I DANIEL BLAKE.  The film club will be back at the end of the month with a classic film from 1974, Peter Hall’s AKENFIELD (12A), based on Ronald Blythe’s book of the same name.  The screening will be followed by the Bungay Film Club Annual General Meeting in the bar, which you are all welcome to attend.

Before then, at the Fisher: Denzel Washington stars and directs in FENCES (12A) on Monday 19 June at 7.30 pm.  This intelligent and brilliantly cast adaptation of the stage play by August Wilson is about Troy, a garbage collector who was once a baseball star.  Viola Davis won the BAFTA, Emmy and Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Troy’s wife, Rose.

‘A simply extraordinary film without crashes, bangs and wallops but full of towering performances delivered with intelligence, power and heart’.

Terri White in Empire Magazine.

All Fisher Theatre Cinema seats £5.  Apologies, no reductions for film club members.  Tickets available at the Fisher Box Office or at http://www.fishertheatre.org/programme.shtml?Code=F&

Monday 26 June at 7.30 pm.

AKENFIELD (12A).

Directed by Peter Hall.  UK 1974.  98 minutes.

An innovative film which has become a part of East Anglian history.  In 1974, the people of a Suffolk village acted out the stories of their lives and the lives of their forebears.  Though the film was inspired by Ronald Blythe’s classic book, the cast invented their own dialogue.  The action centres on the funeral of Old Tom, and travels through the past, present and future of the rural community.

‘Hall and Blythe have together woven a small masterpiece’.  The Evening Standard.

‘… Some of its images cling to the mind like loam to a spade.  For all these things and more, AKENFIELD is worth seeing.’  The Sunday Telegraph 1975.
