NEBRASKA (15)

Director: Alexander Payne.  USA 2013.  115 minutes.

Starring Bruce Dern, Will Forte, Stacey Keach and June Squibb.

Cantankerous old Woody is determined to claim the million dollar prize he thinks he’s won in a sweepstake – even if it means walking 850 miles from Missouri to Nebraska to collect.  Bruce Dern gives a masterful performance in director Payne’s (SIDEWAYS and THE DESCENDANTS) beautifully filmed black and white odyssey.  Bittersweet road movie about the joy and sadness of ageing which was much Oscar nominated but little screened on release.  Don’t miss this poignant, funny film.

SUZANNE (12A)

Director: Katell Quillevere.  France 2013.  94 mins.  French with English subs.

Cast: Sara Forestier, Francois Damiens and Adele Haenel.

This French drama about a truck-driver’s daughter who gets into trouble explores her life and that of her family over a period of 25 years.  Rising star Forestier brings passion to the title role and she is matched by an excellent supporting cast.  A confident second feature from a promising young director which is both visually arresting and emotionally engaging.

This expertly realised drama is subtle, beautiful and mysterious.

Rereleased Italian classic which centres on the friendship between a young Sicilian boy, Salvatore and the irascible projectionist of the local cinema.  Told in flashback as Salvatore returns to his native village as a successful film director, this nostalgic treat is being shown in the original two hour version.  A romantic, comic and exuberant tribute to the joys of cinema and of friendship.

THE LUNCHBOX (PG)

Director: Ritesh Batra.  India/France/Germany/USA 2013.  104 minutes.

Starring Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

A gentle comedy from India to end the year.  Every day in Mumbai, thousands of wives send home-cooked lunches to their husbands’ offices.  One day widower Saajan (Khan LIFE OF PI) accidentally ends up with a stranger’s meal.  Saajan is impressed by the quality of the food and is intrigued when he finds a note included in this lunchbox the following day.  Thus begins a correspondence in this endearing and subtly acted romance.
