The club has received a big blow with the news that Nick McAllen is stepping down as Girls’ Development Officer but his decision is understandable. Nick wishes to ease his very considerable club workload.

Congratulations to both our indoor hockey squads including, of course, the coaches and managers. Let’s hope the club can build on these successes next season.

After the first weekend of the national indoor league both our teams have all to play for this coming weekend when they fight to avoid the two relegation places from their respective Division One.

Indoor Hockey: We have only a few days to wait to at least get some idea how the Ladies’ 1sts and Men’s 1sts Super 6s indoor teams, sponsored by Durrants Estate Agents, are likely to do as both are in action this coming weekend.

While the match between the Dads and the Lads was a lot of fun at Weybread last Saturday I have to start this week with the U18 Boys who took full advantage of their ‘lucky loser’ inclusion in the East Indoor Championship at the UEA.

I have to admit that on occasions my hockey glass is half empty and last Saturday was one of those occasions!

Last weekend was another good one for the club with twelve wins from seventeen matches plus a highly successful social event but I am beginning this week’s column with the Men’s 1sts who didn’t win.

The Ladies’ 3rds, Men’s 2nds, Men’s 1st and U18 Girls (in playing order) all have a strong claim to top billing this week after their excellent wins over the weekend but pride of place has to go to the Men’s 3rds and not just because skipper Matt Brand kindly got me a coffee when I was updating the website on Saturday!

There is no doubt that the Ladies’ 1sts deserve top billing this week for their superb 1-0 win over previously 100% Sevenoaks at Weybread last Sunday.

With water dripping from the clubhouse ceiling and early results disappointing, except for the excellent win by the Girls’ Development over Watton, last Saturday seemed to be heading for the worst day of the season so far.

The Men’s 1sts accepted my challenge of last week to put in a top billing performance against Cambridge University and they did so in fine style at a remarkably warm and sunny Weybread winning 5-1. In the opening minutes Cambridge University seemed content to move the ball across the pitch and rarely got into the Magpies’ half.

Top billing goes to the Men’s 2nds this week following their 2-0 victory over Cambridge City 3rds last Saturday at Weybread. After five successive defeats this was a well-deserved and much-needed victory for Lawrence Baynes and his team who have played better hockey this season than their results would suggest.

Played eight, won eight. What a Saturday it was for our ladies’ teams – and the men didn’t do too badly either on a day when the 1sts hit top form with an emphatic win. In all we had twelve wins, one draw and just two losses in fifteen games with 53 goals for and 20 against.

The Men’s 3rds retained their position as the club’s most successful team so far this season beating Norwich City 4ths 5-0 at Weybread last Saturday with their fourth victory from four games.

It is a toss up this week between the Men’s 4ths and the Ladies’ 2nds for top billing as both gained equally impressive home wins last Saturday. But I will give it to the Men’s 4ths
