Below are details of 22 arts and environment events that will be taking place across the Waveney and Blyth valleys – from Diss to Great Yarmouth, and from Bungay to Minsmere – during August and September 2013.

This is the third time Waveney & Blyth Arts has organised a celebration of what is so special about this beautiful area – and this year we have a particular focus on birds, following our very successful Famous Five Birds schools project.

AREA-WIDE CELEBRATION OF INSPIRING LANDSCAPE AND BIRDLIFE

For those living along the Norfolk/Suffolk border August and September will provide a packed programme of walks, performances, exhibition and events inspired by the local landscape and wildlife, particularly its birds.

Waveney & Blyth Arts has recently unveiled its third annual programme of arts and environment events to celebrate what is so special about the Waveney and Blyth valleys. Planned and organised by a small army of volunteers, and showcasing work by many fine local artists and performers, the 22 events on offer will appeal to all ages.

‘Whether you live in Diss or Great Yarmouth, Bungay or Southwold you will find at least one event happening nearby, and lots of opportunities to take part, whatever your particular passion’ commented Nicky Stainton, chair of the voluntary group which has a mission to support and strengthen the arts in this area. ‘One of the highlights is the Famous Five Birds entertainment, a delightful and fun show about five of the iconic birds of this area, for 5 to 10 year olds and their families. It will be visiting each of our eight towns, so there is no excuse not to catch a performance.’

Other highlights are the creative walks which take a variety of arts themes to shape local walks. This year the ten walks on offer take their inspiration from John Sell Cotman (around Great Yarmouth), Edward Seago (along the Waveney meadows), Sir Alfred Munnings’ horse drawings, engraver and painter Henry Davy, parts of the recently refurbished Angles Way, willow sculpture, maritime songs, church architecture and the five famous birds.

There are lots of opportunities to take part in creative ways, too. Visual artists are invited to take part in Claws, Beaks & Feathers, an open-submission exhibition on the theme of birds at Ravenous Café at the Raveningham Centre, and poets can submit work for the Two Valleys Poetry Competition 2013, on the theme of Taking Flight. Singers can join the Waveney & Blyth Choir, which has already begun rehearsing for a fantastic afternoon concert at Blythburgh Church under the direction of Sian Croose, from Norwich-based Voice Project. Ideas of Flight features settings of poems by internationally recognised poets by four contemporary composers, and was premiered to great acclaim at this year’s Norfolk & Norwich Festival. And for those who like to eat and listen the Arts & Eats event, featuring a presentation by sculptor and print-maker Georgina Warne over a tasty lunch at Ravenous Café, could be just the thing.

The programme is financially supported by Norfolk Trails with LEADER and DEFRA funding, Essex & Suffolk Water, Touching the Tide with Heritage Lottery Funds and the Broads Authority
