CELEBRATE THE WAVENEY & BLYTH Arts 2014

A programme of arts-themed walks, a poetry competition sponsored by The Poetry Trust, and talk by leading experts in the local landscape are just some of the highlights of Celebrate the Waveney & Blyth 2014.

For the fourth year running Waveney & Blyth Arts has put together a varied programme of walks, talks, workshops, events and exhibitions inspired by the local environment.

“We have twenty-two events taking place across the area which stretches from Diss to the coast and from Great Yarmouth down to Southwold” commented Nicky Stainton, Chair of this voluntary group, formed to promote the arts and strengthen the cultural identity.

“All the events are featured in the colourful brochure which is available in arts venues, libraries and other public areas, and on our website. Our poetry competition Waveney & Blyth Words is now open for entries, and the first event, a landscape poetry writing workshop, takes place on 10th August in the beautiful riverside setting of the River Waveney Study Centre at Earsham, thanks to the support of the River Waveney Trust.”

One of the events is a morning of presentations and informed discussion about climate change and its impact on the coastline at The Cut in Halesworth. It will be chaired by writer and naturalist Richard Mabey, Hon. President of Waveney & Blyth Arts, and features landscape expert Dr Tom Williamson from the University of East Anglia, and Karen Thomas, senior coatal adviser for the Environment Agency.

The programme, which runs until 9 October, includes ten walking events which have become a regular feature of the Celebrate the Waveney & Blyth programme. They are walks of varying lengths. This year’s themes include Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the Arts & Crafts movement in Walberswick, WG Sebald and the landscape around Covehithe, willow growing and weaving at Oulton Dyke, sketching the Albion wherry moored at Geldeston Locks and William Morris in Southwold.

The cost of the brochure and many of the activities that focus on the coastal area have been financially supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund through Touching the Tide, the Suffolk landscape partnership scheme.
