Norwich Scout troop celebrates 100 years

One of the largest Scout troops in the UK is celebrating its centenary year with a weekend of activities to mark the occasion.

The 8th Norwich Sea Scouts, set up in 1923, and based on the River Wensum in Norwich, has more than 300 young people, aged from seven to 18, supported by 100-plus adult leaders, young leaders and instructors.

The young people make up four sections – a Beaver colony for the youngest, two Cub packs, three Scout troops and an Explorer unit – who all take part in a range of sea scouting activities with an emphasis on outdoor, adventure-based land and water activities.

Centenary celebrations begin on Saturday, April 29th when with Troop members and their families will enjoy activities on and off the water throughout the day, ending with a tradition campfire.

Past and present leaders, parents and troop members will take part in a range of activities from the group headquarters.

The following day, former troop members will enjoy an afternoon tea with the Lord Mayor, The Sheriff of Norwich and the Lord-Lieutenant of Norfolk.

The 8th Norwich Sea Scouts is recognised by the Royal Navy, and a Royal Yacht Association training centre for sailing, powerboating and windsurfing.

Among those joining in the celebration is Nigel Harvey, who joined the 8th more than 60 years ago aged 10 and who has continued to support the group throughout his life, including as a powerboating instructor.

Including being left in a railway station on his first cub camp after failing asleep on a bench.

Group Scout Leader Tim Brook said: “Although a lot has changed over the past century, our aim remains the same – to provide fun, adventure and skills for life.

“Scouting provides our young people with the opportunity take part in a range of activities, experience the outdoors and build new skills and it’s wonderful to see how confidence grows over the years.

“As well as celebrating the centenary, we will be celebrating the fabulous contributions made to the troop by so many people over the years, including many of our current leaders who were themselves scouts.”
