Christmas mini reading challenge

Did your child enjoy taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge this year? If so then head to your local Suffolk library during the Christmas holidays to take part in the Christmas Mini-Challenge; a new initiative from the Reading Agency.

To complete the festive reading challenge, children simply read three or more library books before 6 January and log their reading on a special Reading Agency website at www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk

After reading three books they will receive a virtual badge on their profile page and a certificate. They will also unlock a special ‘well done’ message from acclaimed children’s author, Cressida Cowell!

Matt Shenton, Literacy Ambassador for Suffolk Libraries, said that “This is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate reading for pleasure over the festive period. It is great that the Reading Agency have added this mini-challenge as a follow up to their successful summertime programme. It is vitally important that children be exposed to a wide-range of books and reading opportunities throughout the year. I hope many of those children who took part in the Summer Reading Challenge will return to take part in this Christmas Mini-Challenge – as well as welcoming many more new recruits!”

In 2015, Suffolk Libraries celebrated a record breaking 8,227 children taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge across the county. This was the highest number ever – around 100 more than in 2014 and the third year running that numbers have increased.

The Christmas Mini-Challenge is open to all children in Suffolk. Visit your local library to borrow your books and log onto summerreadingchallenge.org.uk to start your reading journey.

About the Reading Agency: The Reading Agency are a charity whose mission is to inspire more people to read more, encourage them to share their enjoyment of reading and celebrate the difference that reading makes to all our lives. They support people at all stages of their Reading Journey. Because everything changes when we read.

Christmas mini reading challenge

Just a reminder to people of our Christmas opening hours.

It’s a bit more complicated this year due to the way Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve falls, meaning some libraries’ opening hours are slightly different on those too days.

The general rule is libraries will be closing at 3pm on Christmas Eve (unless they’re not open at that time anyway) and 5pm on New Year’s Eve (again unless they’re not open at that time anyway).

Probably easiest to suggest people check the website – it’s all set out at

suffolklibraries.co.uk/news/christmas-opening-hours-for-2015

and currently on the front page – or check with the library.

All Suffolk libraries will be closed on the following dates:

25 December 2015

26 December 2015

28 December 2015

1 January 2016
