The competition was judged on Thursday, May 25 by Martin Laurence, Chairman Norwich Twenty Group (N20G), along with fellow N20G members Fliss Cary and Joceline Wickham, plus Christine Malcolm General Manager, Maids Head Hotel and Paul Youngs from Expert Print Management.

Hannah Barnes (19) from Norwich won the competition. Her illustration, printed on the mugs, will make its public debut on the Maids Head’s stand at the Royal Norfolk Show. The mugs will then be placed in the hotel’s 84 bedrooms, as part of the tea and coffee making facility, and will be available for guests to purchase as a souvenir of their visit.

Martin Laurence, Chairman N20G said: “The illustrations were all a very good standard. It was a tough job to create an illustration that would work well reduced in size. The students understood the brief, but we really liked Hannah’s illustration, as it emphasised the curve of the building and is suited to the printing process.”

Hannah Barnes with her winning design

Hannah Barnes, who is going to Falmouth University to study graphic design, said: “I really like how the front of the Maids Head curves round from Tombland into Wensum Street, so thought this would work well on crockery. I also decided to incorporate the hotel’s logo in my design. I am very pleased that the judges liked my approach and look forward to seeing my illustration on the hotel’s new mugs.”

Jon Clark, lecturer at City College said: “It has been a very good experience for the students to work on a live brief from a local business. A practical project, like the Maids Head’s, really helps to bring their course alive.”

Paul Youngs from Expert Print Management said: “It was a pleasure to be involved in the judging, so that I could advise on any technical aspects of the printing process. We’ll now work with Hannah’s illustration, so we can deliver the mugs in time for the Royal Norfolk Show.”

Christine Malcolm, General Manager, Maids Head Hotel said: “I would like thank the City College students for their excellent illustrations and our judges for their expert help. Congratulation to Hannah for winning the competition.”
