PEDDLING by Harry Melling

Direction: Charlie Douglas

Wednesday 6th and Friday 8th February 2019 – 1:30pm

Thursday 7th and Saturday 9th February 2019 – 7:30pm

The earth grumbles; growling, rising.

We’re in a field somewhere in London.

A peddler boy wakes up, a firework in his hand.

How did he get here?

“Feels like the intersection of Beckett and Albee… Powerful and delicately calibrated.”

  • The New York Times

Peddling premiered at the Hightide Festival in 2014 before transferring off-Broadway to 59E59, New York. It then had a successful run at the Arcola Theatre in 2015. Harry Melling is also an actor, appearing in King Lear (Old Vic). He is best known for his role as Dudley Dursley in the Harry Potter films (Warner Bros).

Coast to Coast Theatre Company was formed in 2017 by Molly Farley and Rohan Gotobed, both students at the University of East Anglia. Coast to Coast aims to create conversations on local issues and support emerging artists to bring regional voices to national attention. Their first production, About Lester, debuted in June 2018 and received critical acclaim. The Norwich Eye commented “If their premiere production is anything to go by, we will be hearing a lot more about them in the future… one of the most rewarding and engaging dramas that I have seen for a long time.” The company’s second production, Nowt as Queer as Folk, received its premiere at the Maddermarket Theatre in August before a sold out run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Molly Farley is also currently the President of UEA Drama Society. Rohan Gotobed previously played Young Sirius Black in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, where he met Harry Melling for the first time.

About the cast/creatives:

Charlie Douglas is an associate artist for Coast to Coast Theatre Company and is also vice artistic director for Amplify Theatre. For Coast to Coast he previously played Lester in About Lester. His previous directing credits include The Effect and Greg in a Bed (UEA Drama Society) and the Julian award-winning Vaudeville Hearts (Minotaur Theatre Company). Charlie performed Peddling in Swaffham in November 2015, but is thrilled to be working on the drama from a new perspective.

Talking about his involvement in the production, he says “Peddling to me is an exciting exploration into identity, family, and second chances – something so few of us rarely get in this day and age. It’s a raw, angry, and honest reflection on our society, and how we refuse to give anyone an opportunity if it doesn’t benefit us. How can we make it in this life when it seems that everything is set up for us to fail?

“This play is going to be intense, intimate, personal, and powerful. I’m thrilled to be working with such a fantastic crew and brilliant actor, all of whom feel as strongly and as passionately about this play as I do. I saw its debut at Hightide and nearly 5 years later it’s still had such a prominent impact on me, because it doesn’t stop being relevant.”

Seb Fear makes his Coast to Coast debut. His theatre credits include Tom Joad in The Grapes of Wrath (University of East Anglia); Disabled, Divided, Release, Kids in America, Threadbare, Road and Somewhere in the South (Minotaur Theatre Company) and The Grave Total of Everything (UEA Drama Society). He won the Julian award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his role in Road.

Talking about his involvement in the production, Seb says “I’ve wanted to work with Charlie for a while now. Admiring his work from afar I’ve always thought that we could make something really exciting, and hope this project succeeds in that. It certainly has been exciting for us.

“When Charlie first came to me with the script I have to admit I hadn’t heard of it, but ever since my first read-through to beginning to work with the text on a deeper level it has become one of my favourite scripts I’ve ever worked on. This play is essential to spread the message of the downtrodden and the voiceless. And I can’t wait to share it with you all.”
