Bury’s St Edmundsbury Cathedral welcomes back successful UK-first immersive yoga event

Following the sell-out launch of PAUSE, a UK-first multisensory wellbeing and yoga experience held in July, St Edmundsbury Cathedral in Bury St Edmunds will once again open its arched doors to the event this Autumn.

“An absolutely amazing experience”, “The energy was just fantastic” and “It’s an honour to be in this space” were just some of the comments from those who attended the previous immersive yoga event that was aired on BBC Look East and hailed on social media for attracting a wider community to a local historical landmark whilst promoting health and wellbeing.

Hosted by Bury St Edmunds-based fitness company, The Pop Up Gym, PAUSE will be taking place again on Wednesday, 16th October, 6pm-9pm, at St Edmundsbury Cathedral. Guests will be welcomed with a mint tea reception and choral choir, before participating in a yoga session held by esteemed instructor, Jacqui Sinclair. This will be followed by a sound bath, which has fast become a popular form of sound therapy, facilitated by gong master, Lisa Horwell.

Justin Bone, who co-founded The Pop Up Gym in 2017 with his partner, Natalie Pace, has been promoting social and emotional wellbeing through fitness since he experienced its power to turn his own life around. He said: “Those who are aware of my story and the position I was in just four years ago will know how much it means to me to see the success of PAUSE. The response has been overwhelming – we didn’t expect the first event to sell out. We’re excited to have been given the opportunity to reach out to even more people through a second event – so if you missed out last time, get online to book your place quickly!”

A former alcoholic, Justin took an unusual route to recovery by living in a garage to isolate himself for six months. Following this he spent 18 months in a recovery house before finding himself a flat through government support. It was here he came up with the idea of The Pop Up Gym. In June 2018, he was invited to the Prime Minister’s Office, 10 Downing Street, after The Pop Up Gym was selected as one of 100 businesses to discuss the growth of rural businesses. He took the opportunity to give a speech and thank the government for its systems that had supported him, which was received with a standing ovation.

“I am a huge advocate for the difference fitness can make to your health and wellbeing. It literally took me from living on the street to being invited to Downing Street,” continued Justin. “PAUSE is all about connecting your mind, body and soul through an immersive programme that has been designed to help guests take a moment out with friends to switch off from the fast pace of everyday life, whilst experiencing numerous health benefits.

Justin’s partner Natalie said: “We started The Pop Up Gym to encourage a social side of fitness. It gives those who regularly go to the gym the opportunity to extend the health and fitness benefits they enjoy into their social life, whilst also reaching out to those who are interested in fitness and wellbeing but are put-off by conventional environments. PAUSE is a concept we are looking totake to iconic buildings across the country, to festivals and to workplaces. Everyone needs time and space to reflect and recharge”.

The Reverend Canon Matthew Vernon of St Edmundsbury Cathedral said: “People come to the cathedral every day for peace and quiet, to pause in their busy schedules and re-connect with their inner lives. The cathedral is delighted to support wellbeing initiatives that promote health and wholeness in its widest sense. Working with The Pop Up Gym is a great opportunity for us to collaborate with people who are helping others live well.”

With only 100 spaces available, tickets are limited. Tickets cost £39.50, including a goody bag, courtesy of national health food brands, and can be purchased through the event page of The Pop Up Gym’s website: www.thepopupgym.org/fitness-events
