The countdown is on to Norfolk’s Heritage Open Days (HODs) festival, with just days to go until venues throw open their doors and put the spotlight on the county’s rich history.
Marking its 25th anniversary nationally and with more than 350 events and activities planned in Norfolk alone, HODs is a great chance to explore venues you’ve never visited before, discover some hidden gems not normally open to the public and learn more about the historical figures who shaped our communities.
Running over ten days from Friday, September 13 to Sunday, September 22, all events are free to attend with both pre-bookable and drop-in tours, talks, walks, open days, exhibitions and performances.
Highlights in Norwich include guided tours telling the story of Robert Kett and his rebels, a programme of over 20 talks at The Forum from Historic Wherries to Norfolk’s Coastal Treasures, the last chance to take part in the popular Talking Statues trail and a family-friendly open-air production celebrating the Marriott’s Way trail.
Elsewhere visitors can enjoy medieval coin striking in Thetford, a guided walk around Wheatfen Nature Reserve, the chance to explore 200 years of wind power history at the Wind Energy Museum, an exhibition, archive footage and open doors at Waxham Great Barn, Taboo Tours at Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse and 1,000 years of history, characters and stories at Haveringland Church.

The HODs programme is coordinated and promoted by The Forum Trust with support from Norwich City Council, Norwich Tourist Information Centre, Broadland District Council, Breckland Council, Thetford Town Council, Great Yarmouth Borough Council, South Norfolk Council, North Norfolk District Council, Visit North Norfolk and many local organisations and individuals.
