Covid-19 compliant rugby

Covid-19 compliant at Southwold Rugby Club, who would have thought 12 months ago that was a thing.

Seniors and Ladies have been training at Halesworth Campus for a few months now, with new coach Nick Gandy.

These sessions are being carried out following the latest government Covid-19 measures and RFU guidance.  The RFU have specific community game guidance in the form of a return to rugby roadmap which outlines what clubs should have in place and what activity is permitted at the various stages.

Following the reintroduction of limited contact training being approved by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and sport the RFU moved from Stage C to Stage D on the return to rugby road map.  They are also supporting clubs with guidance on reopening facilities etc, Eastern Counties Rugby are similarly updating and supporting local clubs and the support and information is much apricated.

After moving to Stage D, intra-club Youth non-contact rugby was introduced. This takes place midweek at Halesworth Campus Wednesday evenings when the Seniors and Ladies do not train. This has proved very popular with the youth, who are enjoying seeing their team mates again and improving their skills.

Sunday 5th September saw the start of Minis and Youth training back on the Common. Wonderful weather and seamless organisation made for a fantastic opening weekend. All COVID-19 precautions were followed in line with Government guidelines with social distancing being adhered to, track and trace completed and all coaches following RFU guidelines.

It may not be exactly the same as normal but the children loved it and the common was alive with fun and most importantly safe rugby.

Massive thanks to all of the Commitee, Coaches and support staff that made it possible, to all the parents for putting your trust in the club and its coaches and finally to the children for bringing the spirit of rugby back to the Common.

If you would like to give rugby a go then please go to the Southwold Rugby Club website and email the relevant person on the contact page, we are always happy to help and meet new faces.
