Discover two of Norwich’s ‘hidden gems’.

Located just behind Norwich Cathedral, through an impressive stone archway opposite the Law Courts, the Bishops Garden gives a unique, rarely seen view of Norwich and it’s famous Cathedral.

For eight weekends each year the Bishop of Norwich opens his ‘secret garden’ to the public. Each weekend a different local charity stages a fund raising event in the glorious garden setting.

This year the Open Days season debuts with a vintage inspired garden fete to celebrate a milestone anniversary for The Maddermarket Theatre.

Wander down memory lane with entertainments, stalls, games, refreshments and cream teas, then take a slow stroll through the four acre walled garden which dates back to the 12th century and includes a small woodland walk, a kitchen garden, ornate gardens, a bamboo walk, a grass labyrinth and boxed rose beds. In the heart of the kitchen garden you will also discover the plant stall. The head gardener will be on hand with plant care tips and to answer your questions.

2011 marks hundred years since the founding of the Guild of Norwich Players, the theatre’s resident acting company, and ninety years since the theatre first opened it’s doors. Tucked away in the heart of the Norwich Lanes, the Maddermarket Theatre with it’s half timbered walls and Elizabethan styled canopied stage, is often described as an ‘undiscovered’ or ‘hidden gem’.

Staging twelve plays a year by the resident company and hosting various ‘one night stands’ from the classical Locrian ensemble to Theatre De Decadence’s burlesque variety show, the theatre is run by a small professional staff and an army of loyal volunteers.

Gates open 1pm, last admissions 4.30pm.
