Drill House Open Day

DRILL HOUSE OPEN DAY

Sunday 4 June, The Drill House, York Road, Great Yarmouth NR30 2LZ.

2-6pm, FREE entry

SeaChange Arts’ Drill House Open Day takes place this week (Sunday 4 June).  The event has become an annual opportunity to try out some of the activities that take place at The Drill House.

Home to Seachange Arts, the organisation behind the Out There Festival, The Drill House underwent a £1m refurbishment of its main hall last year.  It is now establishing itself as a leading national centre for circus arts and home to a range of community classes and events.

The Open Day features a range of activities including circus skills and taster sessions for SeaChange’s new Circus Tots class, for pre-school children.  There will also be a raffle to raise money for a tight wire for Drillaz, Seachange’s circus school for 8-18 year olds.

“The Open Day’s a fun family day.  A relaxed opportunity to try out a few of our activities and see if you like them,” explained Seachange’s Community Programme Coordinator, Siobhan Johnson.  “It’s also a good way to try your hand at new skills and get involved in some of our other projects.”

Alongside the circus, there’ll me various making workshops with the chance to create funky rag bunting to decorate the park at this year’s Out There Festival.  As part of their Up Our Street project Seachange will also be hosting workshops in mosaic making and you will be able to create your own clay wall planters.

2017 marks the 150th anniversary of the Grade II listed former Drill Hall.  Seachange are celebrating this, and a number of anniversaries this year under the title of 10.20.150.

Together with the anniversary of The Drill House, the Out There Festival celebrates its 10th year and Seachange themselves celebrate 20 years as a charity.

Seachange have a number of ambitious plans to continue the development of the Drill House.

“We want to make this the country’s leading centre for circus and street arts,” says Joe Mackintosh, Chief Executive.  “We’re fundraising for the next stages of building work and we’re keen to preserve and enhance this fine old building, making it the heart of the local community.  Events like the Open Day are a great way of bringing new people into the building, not only to discover what we have to offer but to enjoy one of the town great historic gems.”

The Drill House Open Day takes place on Sunday 4 June, from 2-6pm.  Entry is free. For further information visit www.seachangearts.org.uk
