spectacular East Anglian Dragon Boat Festival

Dragon Boat & Spitfire Spectacular in Lowestoft on Saturday 31st August

Nicholas Everitt Park in Lowestoft hosts the 13th spectacular East Anglian Dragon Boat Festival on Saturday 31st August when over 250 people will take to the water, watched by several thousand spectators. Crews will race the thirty foot brightly painted Chinese boats with ornately carved dragon’s heads and decorated tails three at a time over a 200m course on Oulton Broad.

The teams represent a range of companies and organisations from across East Anglia with a number of different charities set to benefit from the funds raised. St Elizabeth Hospice, RNLI Lowestoft Lifeboat, The Sandra Chapman Centre at James Paget University Hospital and Centre 81 are just some of the good causes the teams will be supporting. Trophies and medals will be presented to the top three crews, the best placed mixed crew and the ‘best dressed’ crew.

The Festival, organized by Gable Events, promises a fantastic day for competitors and spectators alike. Racing takes place every 10-15 minutes from 11.30am until 3.30pm. There will be funfair rides, games stalls and plenty of food and drink for all the family on the bankside as well as a spectacular flypast by a Spitfire of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight scheduled for 3.30pm (subject to any weather and operational restrictions). Entry is free to spectators and there is ample ‘pay and display’ parking available in Nicholas Everitt Park.

Festival sponsor Warner Leisure Hotels will also have four teams battling it out this year, with local teams from Corton and Gunton Hall being joined by crews representing their hotels in Newark and North Wales. All of the Warner teams will be raising much-needed funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The colourful 30’ dragon boats, qualified helms and all racing equipment are provided by Gable Events, no previous experience is required and each crew is guaranteed a minimum of three races.
