Eightieth Birthday Celebrations for Fairhaven Garden’s Volunteer Wildlife Warden

Tabs Taberham, Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden’s volunteer Wildlife Warden, celebrated his 80th birthday on Friday.

To mark the occasion Tabs was presented with a walking stick made by forester, Pete Taylor, from Fairhaven hazel, with a carved piece from the King Oak on top.

Louise Rout, Garden Manager said: “Many happy returns to Tabs, who provides wonderful support to our gardening team, including habitat management advice, monitoring wildlife in the garden, leading regular guided walks and working on wildlife projects like our ongoing entomological survey.”

Join Tabs on his next Walk on the Wildside on Friday 1 February, from 9am to 10.30am. Tabs’ guided tours take place on the first Friday of the month and are included in the garden entry charge: adult £6.85, concessions £6.60, child £3.95 (under 5 free). Please book in advance via www.fairhavengarden.co.uk or t. 01603 270449.

The King Oak is the garden’s oldest ancient tree. It was a sapling at the time of the Battle of Hastings. The piece of the King Oak used in Tabs’ walking stick came from tree surgery done last winter to help keep the tree fit and healthy.

Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden is at South Walsham, signposted off A47 at B1140 junction, half way between Norwich and Great Yarmouth.

The garden is open daily all year, 10am to 4pm until the end of February, then 10am to 5pm (closed Christmas Day), and on Wednesdays until 9pm from May to the end of August. Free entry to tearoom, provisions shop, gift shop and plant sales.

There is wheelchair access throughout the garden, including a Sensory Garden and an accessible boat for trips on the broad from April to October (additional charge). Visitors requiring special facilities are advised to telephone in advance, mobility scooters available.
