HighTide Playwriting Workshops

Are you interested in writing a play? Are you based in or near: Bristol, Ipswich, Manchester, Newcastle, Oxford or Sheffield? Then the free IdeasTap Inspires: HighTide Playwriting Workshops are for you.

HighTide is offering you the chance to attend one of our twelve free playwriting workshops. The workshops will be led by a professional playwright or dramaturg and will be for anyone who has ever been interested in trying to write a play or has written a play but would like some help getting it to the next stage. The workshops are free and will last two hours. This is an exciting opportunity for playwrights or would-be playwrights to hone their skills.

1. Sheffield Crucible Theatre, Wednesday 3rd December 2014

Workshop 1: 11.00 – 13.00. Workshop 2: 14.30 – 16.30. Workshops led by Sarah Grochala.

Sarah is currently Lecturer in Writing for Theatre at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and an associate artist with Headlong.

2. The New Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich,

Thursday 22nd January 2015

Workshop 1: 10.30 – 12.30. Workshop 2: 14.00 – 16.00. Workshops led by Luke Barnes.

Luke is a Northern born award-winning playwright. He’s currently writer on attachment to Soho Theatre (Soho 6) and was the 2013 writer on attachment to the Liverpool Everyman Playhouse.

HighTide Playwriting Workshops

3. Oxford Playhouse, Friday 30th January 2015

Workshop 1: 10.30 – 12.30. Workshop 2: 14.00 – 16.00. Workshops led by Zoe Lewis.

Zoe is an award winning playwright and screenwriter. She is currently writing Bird, a feature film script for Ealing Studios and Mad Mums, a television drama series for Blonde/Black Pictures.

4. Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester, Saturday 7th February 2015

Workshop 1: 10.30 – 12.30. Workshop 2: 14.00 – 16.00. Workshops led by Steven Atkinson.

Steven is the award-winning Artistic Director of HighTide Festival Theatre and is about to remount his sell-out production of Harry Melling’s peddling at the Arcola Theatre 4th – 28th March 2015.

5. Bristol Old Vic, Saturday 14th February 2015

Workshop 1: 10.30 – 12.30. Workshop 2: 14.00 – 16.00. Workshops led by Jack Lowe.

Jack is the award-winning Artistic Director of curious directive. Alongside his work for curious directive Jack is a peer reviewer for the Wellcome Trust, reads for the Bruntwood Prize and works for the National Theatre as a Connections Director.

6. Northern Stage, Newcastle, Friday 27th February 2015

Workshop 1: 10.30 – 12.30. Workshop 2: 14.00 – 16.00. Workshops led by Alex Chisholm.

Alex is a freelance director and dramaturg. She was Literary Manager at West Yorkshire Playhouse from December 2001 and Associate Director January 2006 – July 2014, her blog can be found at www.playnerd.org.

THE BOOTCAMP

IdeasTap, London 

Week commencing 9th March 2015

Once all workshops have been completed, 25 workshop attendees will be selected to submit a sample of their work. The deadline for submitting this will be Monday 2nd March 2015. From these 25 samples, HighTide will select up to 5 people to attend an intensive bootcamp led by director Will Wrightson, and Steven Atkinson, HighTide’s Artistic Director, in London in the week commencing 9th March 2015.

At the bootcamp you will work with Will and Steven and a group of professional actors to develop and workshop your writing culminating in a reading of work.

We aim to offer support for members selected for the final stage of this opportunity. All members from outside London will receive a travel allowance and we will provide accommodation from within our network for those members without a place to stay in London. This will be offered on a case-by-case basis.

There will be two free workshops in each location bu you only attend one.

Application deadline: 26th November 2014

You must be 16 years old by the 26th November 2014 (school year 12 and above).

There is no upper age limit.
