creative workshops

Arts charity, Suffolk Artlink, is running a programme of free creative activities and storytelling sessions for children in Lowestoft this summer.

The sessions are all based on local folk art and traditions and are part of the Lowestoft Folk creative heritage project, run by Suffolk Artlink in partnership with Lowestoft Museum and the Lowestoft Maritime Museum.

Since the project started in January 2018, around 40 school children from three Lowestoft primary schools have worked with more than 60 residents in local care homes and a sheltered housing unit.

Lowestoft Folk

Together, they explored items of folk art and local traditions, using exhibits from the two Museums; they then created their own contemporary folk art, some of which is already on public display.

As part of the project, two brand new exhibits were created – a Cabinet of Curiosity for Lowestoft Museum and the Lowestoft Folk Sea Chest for the Maritime Museum.

These exhibits will feature in the summer storytelling sessions, as professional actress and storyteller, Lynn Whitehead, reveals some of the mysteries of the Cabinet and invites the Sea Chest to give up some of its fishy tales from the deep.

Storytelling sessions in the afternoon of 15th August and on 27th will be supported by a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter.

And whilst Lynn unlocks some of the Museums’ characters and stories, artists Caitlin Howells and Kate Munro will be inviting children to create their own pieces of folk art, from painted shells to shoals of silver darlings.

All sessions are free to attend (venue entrance charges might apply) and are suitable for children aged 7 years and over; children must be accompanied by an adult.

No booking is required; the creative sessions are drop in and the story will be repeated three times during the afternoon.
