Get creative with Suffolk Libraries this summer

Interested in painting, pottery, filming or creative tech? Suffolk Libraries are hosting a wide range of art projects and activities for all age ranges. Whether you are an aspiring artist or a parent looking for ways for your children to get creative this summer, there is something at Suffolk libraries for everyone.

Here are Suffolk Libraries top 10 art events and activities happening over the summer holidays for children, teens and adults to enjoy:

Teen/Adult events

#1: BLOC: Lowestoft Mural Project for 11-25 year-olds at Lowestoft Library, 9th August 10am/2pm 

11-25 year-olds are invited to a special art session! Working with artist Kristy Campbell, you will be designing two murals for Lowestoft Library. Create a mash up of all your ideas, memories and favourite places in Lowestoft to create a personal patchwork of the town. This event is free but contact the library to book your space.  All equipment and refreshments will be provided. This event is part of our BLOC Youth Arts programme

#2: 3 day Creative Tech intensive for artists aged 17-25 at Ipswich County Library, 28th – 30th August

This summer, Suffolk Libraries are inviting young local artists aged 17-25 to come and work with established digital artist Emily Godden at Ipswich County Library exploring digital technologies and creating new works celebrating the unseen parts of Ipswich. Apply here, deadline 14th August.

#3: Four-day summer film-making workshop for 10-18 year olds at Chantry Library, 14th -17th August, 10am – 4pm. 

10-18 year-olds are invited to spend four days making their own films! No experience is necessary and you’ll be placed in age-appropriate groups. Contact the library to book your place.

#4: ‘Out of this world’ art competition for 11-21 year olds at Haverhill Library 

Aged 11-21? Are you too old for the Summer Reading Challenge, but inspired by this year’s Space Chase theme? Create an original piece of artwork on the theme of ‘Out of this World’ for the chance to win a voucher!

Pick up a leaflet from the library to find out more and bring in your entry by Saturday 7 September. Prizes will be presented at the Haverhill Summer Reading Challenge presentation on Saturday 14 September. There will prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, donated to the library by the Haverhill Lions Club.

#5: BLOC Songwriting session for 11+ year olds at Gainsborough Community Library, 21st August, 1:30pm – 4:30pm. 

Suffolk Libraries are launching BLOC – Building Libraries on Creativity at Gainsborough Community Library with two creative workshops for 11+ year-olds with brilliant songwriter, musician and composer Aga Serugo-Lugo where you can have a go at creating your own song! Refreshments provided. This session must be booked in advance by contacting the library as spaces are limited. The other workshop is on 28 August – you can come to either or both!

Children’s events

#6: Children’s pottery painting with Arty Pants at Chantry Library, 6th August 10am – 1pm. 

Children aged 3+ are invited to paint a money box or ornament to take home, with the option to paint additional pottery and wooden items at an extra cost on the day. Advance booking by contacting the library is essential. Tickets cost £5.

#7: Help design a lost planet at Newmarket Library, 7th August 10:30am – 11:30am. 

Suffolk Libraries are making a lost planet which will be displayed on their Summer Reading Challenge board in the library. It is an activity suitable for all the family and will be messy. Inspired by the children’s book The Cosmic Atlas of Alfie Fleet by Martin Howard. Children and families are invited to hear the story and help us create a lost planet for the library!

Please wear suitable clothing as we’ll be using paints and glue.

#8: Make a glowstick alien bag at Bungay Community Library, 13th August 10:30am – 11:30am. 

Children are invited to beat holiday boredom by making glowstick alien bags. Why not update your Summer Reading Challenge record while you’re here? No need to book – just come along!

#9: Scarecrow making workshop at Thurston Library, 14th August 10am – 12pm. 

Get creative in the library garden and make your own scarecrow! Suffolk Libraries have plenty of materials you can use, but do bring along any extra bits you have at home to make your scarecrow unique. Primary school-aged children must be accompanied by an adult. Book in advance by contacting the library.

#10: Make your own marvellous magical minibeast mobile at Southwold Library 2pm. 

Suffolk libraries invites you to make a marvellous magical minibeast mobile with local artist Meraylah. Let your imagination fly with natural materials!
