Get fit and healthy this summer
Healthy Ambitions Suffolk

There’s nothing like the beginning of summer to inspire people to think about losing weight and doing more exercise. And this summer is no different, as NHS Suffolk and Healthy Ambitions Suffolk encourage people in the county to take some small steps that will improve their health and make them feel and look better in summer 2010.

Michael Hattrell, NHS Suffolk health improvement manager said: “Summer is a great time to start getting healthier as there are so many more opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities that will help improve health and fitness.

“Of course, it’s important not to take on too much – by taking a few small steps such as some light exercise or swapping fatty snacks for some fruit, you’ll soon see a difference that will make you want to stick to your health plan.”

Some ideas to make you healthier this summer include:

Swap those snacks for some healthy summer fruit, replace crisps and chocolate with strawberries or raspberries which are in season at the moment.

Get walking, Suffolk is a beautiful place to be in the summer and the warm weather and longer days provide a great opportunity to get out and about. Enjoying a walk along the beach, in the countryside or your local park is a great way to get your recommended 30 minutes a day exercise.

Cycling, take a bike ride. There are some great, dedicated cycle routes around Suffolk that make cycling safe and enjoyable

One way of kick-starting your summer health plan is by logging on to the Healthy Ambitions Suffolk website at www.healthyambitionsuffolk.nhs.uk Here you can access some straightforward and helpful advice on weight management, healthy living and exercise ideas. And to keep you on the right path, you can access an innovative online health manager which will give you a personalised guide on how to improve your health, based on your own lifestyle details.

The Healthy Ambitions Suffolk strategy aims to make Suffolk the healthiest county in the UK by 2028 by cutting the number of preventable deaths and helping people to live a healthier lifestyle. Currently it focuses on three main areas – children and young people, businesses and older people. More areas will be added in the future.

A wide range of partner organisations are working together on the initiative, which is driven by Suffolk Strategic Partnership. More information is available at www.healthyambitionssuffolk.nhs.uk
