Goodnight Mister Tom, the Musical

This February, the historic Maddermarket Theatre in Norwich becomes the temporary home to a rag-tag bunch of World War II evacuees when Dreamcast Productions and Limelight Theatre Company join forces to stage ‘Goodnight Mister Tom, the Musical’.

It is a rare chance to see the musical adaptation of Michelle Magorian’s well-loved book, and composer Gary Carpenter’s highly original score and lyrics lend added poignancy and drama to this heart-warming show. More than 15 local children are appearing in the production alongside adult actors and singers.

‘Goodnight Mister Tom’ is set against the background of the early years of World War II and is the touching story of how a damaged little boy and a grouchy elderly widower find friendship, belonging, healing and love in extraordinary circumstances at a time, which is still within living memory for many people.

Michelle Magorian’s best-selling book regularly features in the school curriculum and has also been dramatized for stage as a play and 1998 television film which starred John Thaw. Here in Norfolk, local families received thousands of evacuee children who had been sent away from their homes in London and other major cities to the safety of the countryside, in an rehoming and mass movement operation which society today would find mind-blowing. An extraordinary event at an extraordinary time in our history.

‘Goodnight Mister Tom’ will be playing at The Maddermarket Theatre from Wednesday 1st to Saturday 4th February 2017 at 7.30pm with a matinee 2.30 on Saturday 4th Feb.

Tickets from the Box Office 01603 620917 at £13 and £12 Concessions.
