Art collective set to fling open their studio doors
An art collective is set to open their studio and workshop doors in a celebration of creativity.
The Harleston & Waveney Art Trail collective (HWAT) will run across three weekends in the picturesque Waveney Valley on the boundary of Norfolk and Suffolk.
Featuring the work of 34 artists, the expanded trail will showcase a variety of work across 31 locations.
Visitors will be able to see the artists at work, browse their collections and purchase work direct from the studios. The trail will run 24 – 25 June, 1 – 2 and 8 – 9 July 2017 with all studios open from 11am until 6pm each weekend.
Chairman of HWAT, Malcolm Cudmore, said: “This year HWAT features a terrific 34 open studios. The trail includes artists that have been trail members since its establishment thirteen years ago as well as several new and returning members.
“This year’s Trail is really full of great work – with probably the widest range of genres and styles that we’ve ever had.
“In addition to the wide range of visual art – from contemporary abstract to traditional East Anglian landscapes, many of our newest members work in 3D. So, there will be more sculpture, textiles and craft objects on display than in previous years.
“And all studios are within a very short distance of Harleston and Bungay.”
From vibrant abstracts and evocative landscapes to textiles, prints and sculptures there will be a range of artwork on display.
Painter Barbara Bernard said: “My year revolves around the few weeks of HWAT Open Studios. I love having an excuse to talk about my work to a wide range of visitors, hearing what brought them to my studio, finding out what appeals to them or doesn’t, getting surprising feedback, and simply sharing what I do.
“My studio is a converted cart lodge attached to our converted barn, surrounded by fields, flooded with light, what could be better.”
Illustrator, Scribbly Roo, who has recently built a custom garden studio said: “The design was based on a giant potting shed, with large tilted windows to let in lots of natural light. I’ve been working in my new studio for a few months now and I’m completely in love with it. I’m very excited to show it off during this year’s Art Trail.”
Entry to all studios and workshops is free and browsers are very welcome. Many of the studios will have collecting boxes for The East Coast Hospice – the trail’s chosen charity for 2017.
Secretary of HWAT, Christina Greathead, said: “As well as the art trail we organise group shows and have a monthly changing display of works at the Farmers Kitchen Cafe in Alburgh as well as Pulham Medical Centre.
“As a voluntary group, working together organising and putting on exhibitions has enabled us to get to know other members in a way that is not usual for Open Studio organisations.
“As a group, we continue to take on new ideas and projects based on suggestions from the membership, this year being our first supporting a local charity. I feel our willingness to initiate new ventures helps keep the group dynamic and popular.”
The Harleston & Waveney Art Trail will also be exhibiting at Ravenous based at The Raveningham Centre as part of the Waveney Valley Sculpture Trail from August 18 until September 17.

The Harleston & Waveney Art Trail Collective (also known as HWAT) is a diverse and lively community of professional artists who live and work in the beautiful Waveney Valley, all within reach of Harleston, a small market town on the border of Norfolk and Suffolk.
The Harleston & Waveney Art Trail has taken place every summer since 2005. Each year the group opens their studios and workshops for two or three consecutive weekends. All the studios are within ten miles of Harleston.
