Year: 2006
Running Time: 169 mins

Director: Philip Gröning
Cast: Carthusian Monks

The German documentary maker Philip Gröning waited for 13 years before the Carthusian monastery of the Grande Chartreuse in the French Alps agreed to his making a film about their lives, laying down the conditions that there should be no artificial light, no music (other than their own Gregorian chants), no interviews, no commentary and no accompanying crew.

The result is a meditation on lives given over to prayer and solitude – an experience of the spiritual existence, rather than an exploratory documentary.
