IT sessions

From August, Suffolk Libraries are hosting several new IT sessions aimed at older people or those with visual impairments.

The sessions will focus on providing advice and improving the accessibility of devices and apps for people who struggle with a visual impairment or have trouble accessing various devices and technology.

These ‘Get online’ sessions are run in partnership with West Suffolk Sight to allow people to get help using apps or devices such as phones, tablets or laptops. Volunteers who specialize in accessibility and assistance technology will be on hand to chat and offer advice.

Similar sessions ran in March at Newmarket Library and Manager Kate Ashton said she believed they could be a boost for older people in their local community:

“Older people are given tablets, laptops or smartphones as gifts or as a contract upgrade and struggle to use them. Our Get Connected events enable people to have some meaningful one to one support with their own device, in a non-pressured environment and at their own pace.”

Gill Turner, Assistant Library Manager of Bury St Edmunds Library said:

“Bury Library is very pleased to be able to offer these IT sessions in partnership with West Suffolk Sight and hope that they are of great benefit to all the community, including those who may have a visual impairment.”

These sessions take place in the following libraries:

Stowmarket Library, 2pm-5pm
1st Tuesday of every month (next one is 6th August)

Brandon Library, 2pm-5pm
Tuesday 20 August, 15 October, 17 December

Mildenhall Library, 2pm – 5pm
Tuesday 17 Sept, 19 Nov

Bury St Edmunds Library, 1pm-4pm

Visually impaired, struggling with tech and can’t make it into the library? Consider signing up for our Home Library Service!

Is your health preventing you from coming into the library? Suffolk Libraries can arrange for volunteers to visit you in your own home, help you decide which books will interest you and order books from the library for you. They will collect the books from the library and deliver them to your door. The service is free and available from most libraries.

If you would like to receive this service, contact your local library or email [email protected].
