The sights, sounds and smells of the middle ages will be brought to life at Pensthorpe Wildlife and Gardens’ Mediaeval Spectacular over the August Bank Holiday Weekend between 25th and 27th August 2012 (10am – 5pm).

The event, which transports visitors back in time to between 900 and 1500AD, has some new attractions for this year; visitors will be able to experience the thunder of war horses and watch as a Mediaeval jousting contest takes place right in front of their very eyes!

The spectacular Viking Longboat invasion across the lake is set to return, along with the witch hunt, living encampments, falconry, storytelling and Mediaeval cooking and the day ends with an impressive Knights Tournament.

Visitors also have the opportunity to meet characters from the past such as the alchemist creating his elixirs or the master mason creating stone carvings for cathedrals and castles.

At the Mediaeval marketplace visitors can step back in time and haggle with merchants for authentic souvenirs, try a flagon of foaming ale or enjoy music from the period.

For those interested in Mediaeval combat, the armoury showcases how weapons and soldiers’ equipment was developed during this time.

Or pay a visit to the barber surgeon – not for the faint hearted – to find out how abscesses were lanced or teeth were pulled.

Historical re-enactment company Black Knight Historical will be co-hosting the event with Pensthorpe for the eighth year.

Kirsty Willingham, Events Manager at Pensthorpe Wildlife & Gardens, comments:

“This is one of our flagship events which never fails to captivate and fascinate our visitors. There is a wide variety of interactive experiences and activities for the whole family plus the new additions like jousting to showcase other traditions from the period. It really does give you the feel of how life really was in Mediaeval Times.

“Being one of the leading Mediaeval re-enactment events in this area this is a popular weekend and we advise visitors to arrive early to make the most of the action.”

Entry to the Mediaeval Spectacular is included in the regular Pensthorpe entrance price which is £6.25 for children, £8.00 for seniors and £9.75 for adults. Alternatively it’s FREE for Pensthorpe Season Card holders and under 4’s.
