Launch of 2016 NGS Norfolk Booklet

The publication of the National Gardens Scheme Norfolk booklet heralds the start of the garden-visiting season and is keenly anticipated by the many people who enjoy open gardens.  It is the essential guide that lists the ninety beautiful gardens across the county that will be open for the scheme, many of which are private and rarely on public view.

Booklets will be available at tourist information centres, libraries, garden centres and nurseries. The guide was launched today in the renowned gardens of The Old Vicarage at East Ruston owned by Alan Gray and Graham Robeson.

County Organiser Fiona Black thanked the sponsor Savills and the advertisers for their kind generosity that has enabled the booklet to be produced cost free. She also thanked the many dedicated garden owners for their hard work in opening their gardens, and the many loyal visitors who visit them.  In spite of it raining on most Sundays last year we managed to raise a record £95,000 proceeds of which go to nursing charities.

The season gets off to a great start on Saturday 20th February at Matthew and Caroline Fleming’s magnificent garden at Horstead House in Mill Road, Horstead, NR12 7AU, millions of the ever popular snowdrops will be on show. Opening from 11am to 4pm admission is £4 with free entry for children. There will be homemade teas available.

On Sunday 21st February, it’s the turn of Bagthorpe Hall, near East Rudham, PE31 6QY with masses of snowdrops along its scenic walks. Some delicious warming soup made from vegetables grown on the estate farm will be available after your winter walk. The gardens are open from 11am to 4pm and admission is £4, children free.

Founded in 1927, The National Gardens Scheme (NGS) has donated more than £45 million to charity.

The NGS gave £2.637 million to its beneficiary charities in 2015 from money raised by opening gardens in England and Wales the previous year.

Charities supported by the National Gardens Scheme include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK, Carers Trust, The Queen’s Nursing Institute and Perennial.

Supported by Visit England, the National Gardens Scheme’s first Snowdrop Festival will see over one hundred gardens open for snowdrops over the month of February 2016.

The 2016 edition of Gardens To Visit (formerly called The Yellow Book) listing opening details of nearly 3800 gardens, is now available to purchase from the NGS website – www.ngs.org.uk.
