AFTER FIRST HALF SCARE  WOLD PROVE ULTIMATELY TOO STRONG FOR IPSWICH

SOUTHWOLD 36 – 20 IPSWICH

With weather conditions more like the South of France than Southwold, this opening fixture in London 2 North East did not disappoint but it took 35 minutes before Ipswich opened the scoring with a try, when their flying right winger proved just too quick for the Wold defence running in on a wide loop from fully 35metres and touching down under great Wold pressure by the corner flag. The kick was great from the touchline and Ipswich were seven point to the good.

Up until that point Wold had dominated territorially but without success as both set of backs battered in to each other probing for a line break.

Wold dominated the scrums but the lineouts from both sides were often lost as is typical for a first game of the season.

Just before the break Ipswich were awarded a penalty for an off the ball offence and again the long kick sailed over.

The first half was to continue for some time however and the lead was cut to seven points as Josh Wallis also struck a penalty from distance for Wold and then two yellow cards for Ipswich for not releasing followed by a tackle without the ball meant they were down to 13 men.

Wold camped in the opposition 22 throughout a period of play in overtime including the two penalties for the yellow cards.  Wold decided to kick for the corner rather than go for the 3 points on both occasions. Wold won both lineouts and from the second Josh Crick ran in to the right of the posts and Josh Wallis levelled the scores at 10-10 immediately before the whistle for half time after 57 minutes had elapsed since the start of the game.

Almost straight from the restart Ipswich were in the lead again after a penalty for a Wold forward being off his feet in the ruck but from the Wold kick off they stormed straight down to the Ipswich line and after a series of forward dives Matt Warren went over for the try. Wallis was again on target and Wold had their noses in front for the first time at 17-13.

On 60 minutes Ipswich were attacking and kicked the ball over the Wold back line but Jacob English caught the ball on the left wing and sidestepped and battled his way from his own half right down the pitch to beat four tacklers and score the try of the day. Wallis again obliged with the extra two points. 24-13 to Wold.

Ipswich battled on and again were attacking when that man English nipped in for an interception and sprinted in under the posts again from his own half and with Wallis adding another two points it was game over at 31-13 with a little over ten minutes left to go.

Wold’s Zak Loader was then yellow carded for coming in from the side in Wold’s 22  and the visitors took full advantage and scored out on the right and with the kick good it was 31-20 with eight minutes left on the watch.

Wold were to score again when skipper Cemil Duruk broke up the middle and after a series of forward drives it was again Matt Warren who forced his way over for his second try out on the left.

Wallis this time missed his conversion by a whisker to the right of the posts to give the final score of 36-20 in Wold’s favour.
