MAGPIES MIXED SEEKING NATIONAL GLORY

The 2014/15 season began on Saturday 13 September and it concludes this coming weekend with the national mixed finals at the Lee Valley Sports Centre in Stratford with Magpies looking for victory which has eluded them in their two most recent appearances at this stage of the competition, namely Sheffield (2011) and Nottingham (2013).

Magpies have enjoyed an excellent season and go into the finals with their best chance of victory since skipper Charlie Harrison led the team to a 5-0 triumph over Birmingham University in the final at Bowdon HC in June 2004. At this stage I just have to say our vital first goal was scored by Iain Cumming (with a rasping short corner shot just after half time) or else he might never forgive me! For the record the others were scored by Emma Lee-Smith, Philip Cobbald and Tim Whiteman with a brace. Tim’s hockey career has since gone into decline to such an extent he now finds himself in the England and GB squads!

On Saturday Magpies play Hampstead & Westminster in their Trophy semi-final clash at 1.30pm and hopefully next day they will play the winners of the other semi between Bedford and Horsham in the final at 4.00pm. If not they will be up against the losers for the bronze medals at 2.00pm.

The Magpies squad is (as per team sheet) – Matt Collinge (GK), Frances Taylor, Katrina Sitch (vice-captain), Amy Campbell, Lauren Barber, Lauren Mickleburgh, Lizzie Clymer, Lucy Whiting, Maria Andrews, Simon Hipwell, Chris Barber, Leigh Sitch (captain), Andrew Bedwell, Toby Price, Martin Fields, Richard Larkin, Robbie Kinsella with Sam Moore (manager) and Jon Price (coach).

Best wishes to the Magpies squad and to ‘out-on-loan’ Amy Brook who is in the Reading squad to play Formby in the Plate semis with Dereham and Eastcote battling it out in the other semi.

SERENA SITCH’S MOONWALK
Message from Serena

I am pleased to let you know that I completed the London MoonWalk on the night of 16th May/early morning 17th May in aid of Breast Cancer Research. We were really lucky with the weather – cold, clear and only a little wind. There was an amazing atmosphere with cars, taxis and buses pipping, people cheering us on and everyone enjoying themselves. It was a fantastic experience. I crossed the line with a smile on my face, no blisters and only a few aches and pains at 7.06am having thoroughly enjoyed the night.

I have raised just over £1,000 and I would like to take this opportunity to give a really big ‘thank you’ to everyone who kindly sponsored me.

Serena

‘Well done’ to Serena on completing the Moonwalk (a very popular annual event in respect of breast cancer) over the marathon distance of 26.2 miles and for raising such a splendid sum of money.
