Celebrate National Nestbox Week at RSPB Minsmere nature reserve by making your own nestbox for birds this half term.

The ‘Make a nestbox’ event offers families the chance to make their own nestbox to attract birds, especially blue tits, to nest in their gardens.

The event takes places from Monday 21 to Wednesday 23 February 2011, with three one-hour sessions each day, starting at 9.30 am, 10.30 am and 11.30 am. Costs are £8 per child, or £5 for RSPB Wildlife Explorers, including all materials.

There will be information about different boxes to buy for a wide variety of birds and other wildlife, including bees, hedgehogs and sparrows, with many of these available in the RSPB Shop. There’s even 10% off selected boxes from 16 to 22 February.

RSPB spokesman Ian Barthorpe said, “Many people want to know how to attract more birds to their garden. This is an excellent opportunity to find out how you can help, and have fun making your own nestbox. There are many other ways that you can help wildlife in your garden. “Early spring is a great time to visit Minsmere. Woodpeckers are drumming, birds are singing and blooming snowdrops are a signal that warmer weather is around the corner. After making your nestbox, why not explore our nature trails with a choice of exciting self-guided activities: explorer backpacks, bird bingo or simply a relaxing walk.”

Places are limited for the make a nestbox event, so advance booking is recommended by calling the Minsmere Visitor Centre on 01728 648281.
