Margaret Chadd House

The Mayor gave the crowd of people gathered a few words, saying “This is an auspicious day for East Coast Hospice. Once built Margaret Chadd House will give compassion, dignity and peace to so many people across Great Yarmouth and Waveney”. The Hospice will be named after Margaret Chadd; a strong 93 year old Southwold-based philanthropist whose hospice work dates back to 1967 when she worked with Dame Cicely Saunders to found the first ever hospice. Mrs Chadd stood proudly alongside the Mayor as she ceremonially covered the roots with soil to mark the charity’s first actions on the site; which now totals 7.54 acres after the completion of purchase on the final slice of the field.

This will begin with a gardening day at 10am on the 15th of November, when more than 30 keen green-fingered volunteers will be planting hedgerows donated by The Barnes of Sotterley Estate, and over 400 saplings donated by the Woodland Trust, who recognise the health benefits of creating a revitalising natural haven for patients and their families. It will include a memorial water feature, peace garden, a kitchen garden plot and a shepherd’s hut. The seven and half acres will also contain a large free car park and private gardens for each of the ten spacious in-patient rooms.

If you have your wellies at the ready and a trowel to hand and would like to help out with this please get in touch with the East Coast Hospice office (01493 718707) or see the website www.EastCoastHospice.org.uk for more information.
