The-Cut-Media-Centre-Gary

Twelve months on from its launch, the Media Centre has seen a hugely successful year with much more to come.

The Cut at Halesworth has always had a strong reputation in the arts world but now, after running a highly successful pilot media education project with the North Suffolk Schools Partnership, it is set to launch a media production company run by pupils who successfully complete their cutting edge media and film course.

The first production team, called ‘Platinum Dynamix at The Cut’ will use their already strong media skills to make films for local and regional organisations.

They will be mentored by film and media professionals at the Cut and will also learn the whole process of running a media production company, from pitching for contracts through to producing professional finished products that meet a client’s brief.  The unique selling point of the company will be that school pupils under professional guidance will be running it. They already have a number of commissioned projects on which to start work over the summer.

Media Centre founder, Simon Raven, says “Our vision is to create a seamless pathway from the exploring of creative ways with digital technology to entrepreneurial enterprise at community and commercial levels”.  And Mark Attenburrow, senior teacher at Bungay High School, confirms that he “cannot speak highly enough of what is going on and the changes it has made for our students”.

The Media Centre has been open for just one year and already it has staged a programme of community courses and workshops which have included successful sessions on website design, digital image editing, landscape photography and the business use of social media.

During the summer the Media Centre will host both a series of short ‘fun with photography’ courses to tie in with people’s use of cameras to record their holiday moments, and two solid weeks of film-making during the last part of August for different age groups of young people.  The latter will not only take the boredom out of “too much holiday” but will also provide Bronze Arts Award certification for those who’d like something to take away with them at the end of their time.

In the Autumn Term, apart from a full programme of community activities, the Media Centre will host an A Level Photography course for Sir John Leman High School sixth-formers – a first for The Cut.  There will also be another pre-apprenticeship project in partnership with the North Suffolk Schools Project.
