Musings? Mutterings? Mumbles? Musings it is to be, as suggested by Matt Brand, for this column which I’ll be writing to enable Mark Legg, our new chairman, to concentrate on the many other aspects of the club’s management, especially the playing side, which will require his attention over the months ahead.

The column will be weekly from early September and will, hopefully, be informative, snappy (I’ve been accused in the past of being too wordy!) and even provocative on occasions. It will also contain from time to time contributions from other club members. Your feedback whether verbal or in writing will be welcome as in the past. So here goes.

Facilities update –
Pitches – most of the old paint on the lines of the water-based pitch have been removed and the lines repainted. Special thanks go to David Cobbald for his hard work with the paint removal aspect of this project over two very hot days.

Clubhouse – much of the clubhouse has been redecorated with particular thanks to Tony and Sue Williams and John Pestell for their practical leadership with this task; a task which reminded me why I never paint my own house! NB. If you don’t like what has been done or the colours used I will assume you are volunteering to help in the future!

Our thanks also go to all the other members who have helped with the above projects.

The shelters on the water-based pitch will be cleaned and repaired before the start of the new season.

Other matters in preparation for the new season –
Irene Bicker and Merna Merrett have been dealing with the fixtures and pitch slot allocations; the handbook has been prepared and will soon be online (hard copies will also be issued on payment of subscriptions); Irene Bicker and Linda Hunter have issued the subscription and training fees invoices; the website has been updated by Nigel Bedingfield and Kirstin Cumming has been dealing with the many kit issues. Our thanks go to everyone involved in these vital tasks.

Social update –
Strawberry Luncheon – 150 people attended this very successful event kindly hosted by Malcolm and Sue Blackham and most efficiently organised by David Alexander and Daphne Beckett. £1000 was raised for club funds.

Summer Ball to mark the club’s move to Weybread 50 years ago – nearly 300 people attended this splendid event master-minded by Philippa Taylor and Jose Tibbenham with the invaluable support of Tracy Reeve and Mary Wright. £2800 was raised for club funds.

Golf Day – 104 players supported and enjoyed this annual event at Bungay GC which made a profit of £1450. The winning teams in respectively the men’s, ladies’ and mixed categories were – LMB Services (Les Bicker and friends – again!), The Third Generation (Ann Cunningham and friends) and Bully Team (John Kent, Shirley Pull and friends).

Social and fund raising programme for 2009/10 has been finalised under the chairmanship of Tracy Reeve. Please see the website and note your diary! First event – Curry-Oke Night on Saturday 24 October.

The club is indebted to everyone who supported or helped to organise the above events.

Playing update –
Training will soon be in full swing for all players. Please see website for training times, early season fixtures and the implications of the new self-pass rule which all of us are having to come to terms with!

With kind regards and best wishes
