July is an ideal month to get out and enjoy the garden as perennials and shrubs reach a peak of perfection and display a rich palette of colours.   There are nineteen beautiful gardens awaiting visitors this month, including five venues opening their garden gates for the first time for the National Garden Scheme – The Firs, Burnley Hall, North Corner, 30 Hargham Road and 33 Waldemar Avenue.

The Firs, nr Bungay is an acre of secret gardens encompassing three different ponds, an orchard, flower borders, rose garden, a formal kitchen garden and lawned areas. There are many places to sit and watch the wildlife and enjoy the garden.

Burnley Hall, Gt. Yarmouth/ North Corner, Gt. Yarmouth are a combined opening under one entry fee.  The Hall garden has large mixed beds, which are formed around two lawns. Newly planted hydrangeas, hellebores and crocosmias lie in borders near the house, and an elderly thatched and a new summerhouse will be on view.    North Corner is a newly designed, small village garden lying only half a mile from the beach. The garden has diversely planted beds, and collections of hostas, bonsai and agapanthus. There is also a large greenhouse full of exotic plants on show.

30 Hargham Road, Attleborough is a vibrant, colourful haven of just under a ⅓ acre. The garden has been created from scratch and has self-built structures, homemade water features and a modern allotment area. The borders are filled with perennials and annuals with a variety of exotics.

33 Waldemar Avenue, Hellesdon, Norwich  is a surprising and large suburban garden with an exciting mix of exotic and tropical plants combined with unusual perennials, many grown from seed. A quirky palm-thatched Tiki hut is an eye catching feature and you can sit by the pond and see wildlife and rare plants. A large collection of succulents will be on show and there will be plants available to buy.

All the open gardens will be serving delicious home-made cake, and tea and coffee.  Entry for children is free, but please check the website for garden entry fees, wheelchair access and whether the garden is dog friendly.  If you have not yet got your free booklet listing all the 2019 National Garden Scheme ‘Gardens to Visit’ then you can find one at your local  library, garden centre or tourist information centre.  Alternatively you can find out about gardens open throughout 2019 by accessing our website:  ngs.org.uk and searching for Norfolk gardens.
