A leading, nationally acclaimed 4 star hotel in North Norfolk which once played host to Lord Nelson himself is to launch an exhibition of his memorabilia when the Nelson Exhibition opens at The Hoste in Burnham Market on 10th April 2014.

The exhibition, which features a number of exhibits including letters written by Nelson, will be run in partnership with the Nelson Museum in Great Yarmouth.

It is expected to be the largest exhibition of Nelson artifacts in Norfolk outside of the Museum and will comprise a series of prints, as well as letters written by Nelson and his protégé Captain Sir William Hoste.

Visitors can expect to see prints from artists including George Arnald and Benjamin West; many of which have been loaned to The Hoste from the National Maritime Museum and the Nelson Museum.

The Hoste, formerly the Pitt Arms, was often frequented by Nelson in his early years when he spent time in Burnham Thorpe, where he was born in 1758, before being recalled to service in 1792. He also reportedly stayed overnight in Room 5 of the hotel  before catching the morning coach to London and he regularly used the Hoste as a recruiting post.

Brendan Hopkins, owner of The Hoste comments: “Nelson loved the Burnhams and spent a great deal of time here at The Hoste; we feel we provide the perfect home for an exhibition to celebrate his legacy

“Many of our guests are Nelson enthusiasts and are interested in finding out more about his years spent in this area. We want our visitors to engage with Nelson’s story and to take advantage of the chance to learn more about his legacy whilst spending time in one of the places where he used to socialise and stay. Fewer visitors are aware The Hoste was named after another local seafarer, Captain Sir William Hoste.

Hannah Bentley, exhibition curator, comments: “What’s so special about this exhibition is that it tells the story of William Hoste’s relationship with Nelson and how Nelson nurtured the young sailors who worked with him. Although Hoste’s story is not so well known, he’s another Norfolk hero to be proud of.”

The exhibition is free and open to the public between 10am and 5pm in The Hoste’s Garden Lodge. There is no need to book. The exhibition will remain open for a minimum of two years.
