Fran Speight, Suffolk Artlink Project Development Officer, said: “We are really looking forward welcoming new students to work alongside theatre practitioners and prop makers Lisa Marie Hoctor, Sally Zubowski and Molly Barrett this term.

“Our students will be exploring lots of aspects of theatre arts and working towards a performance at the end of the course inspired by their own ideas.   As well as providing our students the opportunity to participate in high quality arts activities, our JumpstART courses also help them to develop life skills such as team work, listening and communication.

“And for people that would like to give it a go before committing to the full 15-week course, we’re also offering a special taster day this Thursday.”

Harvey, JumpstART student on a previous course, said: “I’ve learnt so much on this course that it’s turned my life around.  I’ve learnt to talk to people and help them out. I used to feel nervous about people but now I don’t.”

The taster day will take place this Thursday, 23rd February, 10am – 3pm, at The Bethel Centre, Battery Green Rd, Lowestoft NR32 1DE, cost: £15.

The full 15-week theatre arts course will take place every Thursday, 10am – 4pm, starting from 2nd March, at The Bethel Centre, Battery Green Rd, Lowestoft NR32 1DE, cost: £225 (£15 per session).

Notes

JumpstART is an arts training course run by Suffolk Artlink for people with learning disabilities. It offers students a chance to experience an in-depth exploration of an art form and the opportunity for personal development.

Students taking part in JumpstART! courses learn new skills, gain confidence, experience working with professional artists and make visits to arts and cultural venues. The courses finish with an exhibition or performance where students get the chance to show their work at a public event. Courses run in Bury St Edmunds, Lowestoft and Ipswich and each module focuses on art forms including illustration, dance, film making, theatre, photography, music and visual arts.

Suffolk Artlink believe in the instrumental value of the arts and promote participation in professional artist-led activities as a positive way to improve people’s health and wellbeing through reducing social isolation and developing new skills and confidence.  We achieve this by providing a varied programme of projects delivered in the community, working in partnership with health, care, voluntary and community organisations to reach our participants.
