Celebrating 90 Glorious Years
It was in the 1927 that 600 gardens opened their gates for the National Garden Scheme to raise funds for The Queen’s Nursing Institute, which founded district nursing. Entrance fee was just a shilling with children free. In the first year £8,000 was raised and the National Garden Scheme (NGS) was born.
Twelve gardens opened their gates in Norfolk including Sandringham House which has supported the Scheme for every one of Charity’s 90 years.
The NGS has now become the most significant charitable funder of nursing in Britain and to celebrate this glorious landmark 400 gardens will open in England and Wales on the Bank Holiday weekend of the 27th to 29th May
In Norfolk four gardens will participate starting on Sunday 28th May with a garden new to the scheme at Bank House in Marshland St James, PE14 8JT. This exuberantly planted 2 acre garden has a wide range of growing conditions from damp shade to dry gravel so plenty of ideas to take away!
Also open on Sunday 28th, is The Old Rectory at Brandon Parva, NR13 6HS which has 4 acres of garden compartments showcasing pergolas covered in roses, wisteria and clematis with plenty of beautiful mixed borders. You can even have a game of croquet on an immaculate lawn! In addition Warborough House, Stiffkey NR23 1QH has 7 colourful acres which include a woodland walk, shrub borders, formal terraces and a walled kitchen garden.
Lastly on Bank Holiday Monday 29th May Chestnut Farm in West Beckham NR25 6NX is a favourite garden for plantaholics with plenty of rare shrubs and trees to seek out!
All the gardens highlighted will have home-made teas and several have plants for sale.
