Norfolk Gardens open in June
Summer truly arrives this month with no less than 22 gardens opening for the National Garden Scheme in Norfolk. However, one feature that no other County among the 57 throughout England and Wales can match is the number of magnificent Hall gardens participating in the NGS in Norfolk. In June six will open their grounds to visitors.
Starting at the annual NGS Garden Festival Weekend on the 3rd June Barton Bendish Hall, PE33 9DL opens for the first time with 10 acres of traditional country estate garden incorporating orchard and kitchen garden, herbaceous borders, walled herb and cut flower garden, together with a large greenhouse full of scented pelargoniums.
Also on Sunday 3rd June Oulton Hall, NR11 6NU makes a welcome return after suffering a tragic fire that destroyed much of the Hall in 2015. It has now been rebuilt to provide a lovely setting for 6 acres of gardens. These include herbaceous borders, Italian, parterre and water gardens all developed over the past 16 years.
On Sunday 10th June Bolwick Hall at Marsham, NR10 5PU has a landscape attributed to Humphrey Repton and plenty colourful plantings to enjoy together witth a walk around the lake and woodland Aldborough Primary school is providing the teas, a great idea to get children involved!
On Sunday 17th June Elsing Hall, NR20 3DX also makes a welcome return with 10 acres of fascinating gardens in an unrivalled setting around a moated 15th Century Hall. Possibly the the most romantic garden setting in Norfolk!
On the same day West Barsham Hall nr Fakenham NR21 9NP has 10 acres of parkland and gardens originally laid out by Gertrude Jekyll so guaranteed to have plenty of horticultural highlights!
At Oxnead Hall, NR10 5HP on Sunday 24th June there is an opportunity to see the restored 14 acres of gardens originating from 1580 and 1660. The formal gardens are stunning!
