Spring Show Starts

March is the month to see the last snowdrops of winter, plenty of other less well known flowering bulbs, some unusual scented shrubs and the start of massed displays of daffodils. The National Gardens Scheme in Norfolk has three gardens opening this month where you can feast your eyes on all these floral delights!

Chestnut-Farm-MHarpur

Chestnut Farm near  West Beckham, Holt, NR25 6NX on Sunday 2nd March  11 to 4pm, admission £4.50 and children free. Here is the opportunity to view over 70 varieties of snowdrops close up through walks and borders. Many other early spring flowers will also be on show including hellebores and some wonderfully scented shrubs. This renowned garden has featured in many publications recently including the Royal Horticultural Society’s Garden magazine. Owners John and Judy Wilson are real plantaholics and keen to share their considerable knowledge.

On Sun 30th March at HINDRINGHAM HALLHindringham, NR21 0QA. thousands of daffodils are on show with over 30 different varieties to wander through. The tranquil setting of a Tudor Manor House complete with 13thC.moat makes this a garden to savour and remember. The garden is open from 10 to 4pm, admission £6 with free entry for children.

Also open on the 30th March MANNINGTON HALL nr Saxthorpe/Corpusty, NR11 7BB has an equally glorious setting of a moated manor house and Saxon church with 19th century follies follies to explore. The extensive countryside walks and trails provide plenty of scope for some gentle exercise! The garden is open from 12 to 5pm (12-5), Admission £6 and children free.

At each garden warming refreshments will be available to ward off the winter chill.

 

National Gardens Scheme

Founded in 1927, the NGS gave £2.6 million to nursing and other caring charities in 2012 from money raised by opening more than 3800 private gardens in England and Wales.

Charities supported by the National Gardens Scheme this year include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Help the Hospices, The Carers Trust and Parkinson’s UK.

Visitors to the NGS website can use the online ‘garden search’ tool to find out which NGS gardens are open on specific dates and within chosen areas throughout the year.

The free NGS iOS app for iPhone and iPad will allow visitors to see what’s on and share garden opening details with friends via Facebook and Twitter.
