Norfolk Open Gardens: High Summer High Colour!
The mellow colours of late summer are a major feature in the nine gardens opening for the National Gardens Scheme during August starting at Church Farm in Wramplingham on the 3rd August.
This half acre garden has a beautiful cottage garden feel with plenty of hot and pastel shades. Open on the same day is Dunbheagan near Dereham where the knowledgeable Jean Walton has a vast range of perennials in packed island beds and even some for sale!
On the 10th August Severals Grange, Wood Norton is the well known nursery which specialises in foliage plants and grasses displayed in its expanding gardens. This is the place to get ideas for some great plant combinations to use in your own garden with the bonus that they are all available to buy!
Daisy Cottage in Roughton is open on the 17th August and has great variety of formal and informal garden features. Lots of busy free range hens and ducks plus a bee and bugs demonstration which will be of particular interest for children.
For the August Bank Holiday weekend there are two new and very different gardens opening for the first time. Sui Na Mara near Bacton is a tardis of an exotic garden which contains 130 plant varieties in various garden rooms to seek out.
The garden is open on the 23rd, 24th and 25th August. (not sure about the word tardis and had to look up its full meaning – which of course could be appropriate!)
The other new garden is Whartons Rose Fields opening on the 23rd and 24th August. Whartons are the UK’s largest rose grower with over 300 varieties to see and smell! A rose expert will be available to talk about and give advice on all things roses!

- Founded in 1927, the NGS gave £2.13 million to nursing and other caring charities in 2013 from money raised by opening more than 3800 private gardens in England and Wales.
- Charities supported by the National Gardens Scheme this year include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Help the Hospices, The Carers Trust and Parkinson’s UK.
- Visitors to the NGS website can use the online ‘garden search’ tool to find out which NGS gardens are open on specific dates and within chosen areas throughout the year.
- The free NGS iOS app for iPhone and iPad will allow visitors to see what’s on and share garden opening details with friends via Facebook and Twitter.
