Heritage Open Days (HODs) – England’s largest and most popular voluntary cultural event – is back and will run between Thursday, 6th and Sunday, 9th September 2012, with around 200 free events celebrating Norfolk’s fantastic heritage for everyone to enjoy.

HODs celebrates all of Norfolk’s fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to events and interesting properties that are usually closed to the public or normally charge for admission. There will be open buildings, guided tours, exhibitions, talks and music and dance performances across the county linked to the theme.

This year’s free events brochure will cover around 200 events in Norwich, Broadland, Great Yarmouth and surrounding area, South Norfolk and Thetford. Look out for the brochure in cultural venues, tourist information centres, libraries, local post offices, cafes and shops across Norfolk from 6th August, when booking for pre-booked events will also open.

Events will also be listed on www.heritagecity.org/hods and you can keep up-to-date by following HEART on Twitter – @NorwichHeart and on Facebook. To receive a brochure by post or email at the start of the booking period, call 01603 305575 or send your name and email or postal address to [email protected].

Michael Loveday, Chief Executive of Norwich Heritage Economic and Regeneration Trust (HEART), which coordinates the events in Norwich and produces the brochure said:

“Heritage Open Days is a great celebration of our heritage and culture and with around 200 events taking place this year we hope there is something for everyone.”

The events brochure is produced in partnership with Broadland District Council, Great Yarmouth Borough Council, South Norfolk Council and Thetford Town Council which are responsible for organising events in their respective areas and with Norwich events supported by Norwich City Council.

About Heritage Open Days
Heritage Open Days was established in 1994 as England’s contribution to European Heritage Days (EHD), The Council of Europe created European Heritage Days to bring people closer to their cultural heritage by throwing open the doors to historic monuments and buildings – preferably those which are usually either closed or are only partly accessible to the general public.

To ensure that no-one is excluded from enjoying the benefits of the event, the Council of Europe made it a key requirement that access to all properties taking part in EHD should be offered free of charge. European Heritage Days are held annually in September in 50 countries.

The UK is represented by The Heritage Open Days National Partnership, Open House London, Doors Open Days in Scotland, Open Doors Days in Wales and European Heritage Days in Northern Ireland.
