Trust celebrates success of Peer Support Workers and Recovery College students

Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust will celebrate the graduation of their first Peer Support Workers and the launch of their second Recovery College programme on Thursday 4th September at the Guildhall Complex in Thetford.

The Recovery College and Peer Support Worker programme are key elements of the Trust’s recovery programme which aims to help those who’ve experienced mental illness to achieve personal recovery goals and aspirations, and use their knowledge and expertise to inspire and educate others.

The Peer Support Worker graduation ceremony will take place from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Dr Rachel Perkins, a clinical psychologist and expert in mental health, will present the new Peer Support Workers with their graduation certificates.

Peer Support Workers are employed specifically as a result of their lived experience of mental health issues; either personally or as a carer. They complement the Trust’s mental health worker expertise with their insight, experience and expertise in personal recovery journeys.

In the afternoon, from 2pm to 4pm, the Trust will launch the Year Two Recovery College programme, with presentations from college tutors, many of them experts in their field. Michael Scott, Chief Executive at the Trust will acknowledge the achievements of the college’s students.

“Everything in the Trust’s Recovery College is based around understanding and living well with mental health issues,” says project lead Lyn Skipper. “All the courses are co-produced and co-attended by service users, carers and professionals in the service.

This method of working brings people with lived experience of mental illness together with those who’ve learnt about mental health conditions through working in the health service. It provides Trust staff with greater insight into the issues that confront people with mental health issues and allows service users to get to know staff who care for them on a far more personal level.”

This event takes place at The Guildhall Complex Carnegie Room, Cage Lane, Thetford IP24 2DS. (Lunch will be served from 12.30pm to 1.30pm.) If you would like to attend, please email [email protected]

Courses at the Recovery College take place at venues throughout Norfolk and Suffolk. They are open to adults who use the services provided by Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust and their carers. Further information can be found at www.recovery-college.org.uk
