Sparkling gypsy music alongside the works of composers whose lives were affected by the third Reich introduced and performed by virtuosic violinist, Marianne Olyver, with pianist Nigel Yandell. Another interesting journey into the exciting repertoire that could so easily have been lost in the WW2 Holocaust.

‘Mrs Robinson, are you trying to seduce me?’ Benjamin Braddock returns from college to embark on his own sexual odyssey with his parent’s next door neighbour, a woman more than twice his age. When her daughter finds out, a girl far more ‘suitable’ for Ben in his parent’s eyes, some interesting and hilarious emotional dynamics ensue. Adapted from the classic 1967 film comedy that launched Dustin Hoffman to stardom, this is a very sexy and very funny play.

The Magic Flute

Thursday 10 – Saturday 12 October, 7.30pm

Mozart’s final theatrical masterpiece is a heady cocktail of slapstick and symbolism. Tamino must rescue Pamina but who can he trust? It’s an assault course out there!

The Magic Flute takes a playful but profound look at man’s search for love and his struggle to attain wisdom and virtue. This exciting new production sung in English features a company of young, professional soloists with full chorus, all accompanied by the Virtual Reality Orchestra.

 

Shakespeare Schools Festival

Monday 14 & Tuesday 15 October, 7.00pm

The Shakespeare Schools Festival, the UK’s largest youth drama festival, works with 1,000 secondary, primary and special schools all over the UK, making it possible for them to stage abridged shakespeare productions in their local professional theatre.

Each night four schools will perform four different Shakespeare plays. Come along and celebrate the achievements of your local schools in a wonderful evening of entertainment.

The Lovesong of Alfred J Hitchcock

Versatile young London-based professional and successful teachers, Ellie and Chris are often found performing in West-end shows, National Orchestras or at the famous London jazz club, Ronnie Scott’s. They are both equally at home performing baroque and classical as Latin and Jazz, and today’s programme will be a showcase of their talents.

This dramatisation of Agatha Christie’s bestselling novel finds ten people stranded in the lonely house on Soldier Island when their supposed hosts send word that they have been detained. It transpires that no-one has met their hosts and that they have been decoyed to the Island. First one then another dies; each death according to the rhyme of Ten Little Soldier Boys.

Think you’re a music fan? Then join us for our very first Golden Oldies Pop Quiz!

Enter your team for a night of beer-filled fun to test your pop music knowledge (Golden Oldies – pre-1990’s music). Question rounds include Guess the Intros, Complete the Lyrics, Guess the Star, Pop Facts and more (with video clips and music played out into the auditorium)… plus a Rock Mastermind round for those who want to brave the chair on their specialist subject.

Guards! Guards!

Ankh-Morpork is under threat by a flesh-eating dragon that leaves havoc and destruction in its wake! The safety of the city depends on a brave band of warriors… unfortunately; all that’s available is a motley bunch of misfits – the bumbling City Watch, an orangutan librarian, a zealous miniature dragon-breeder, and even a cameo from Death!

Terry Pratchett’s hilarious fantasy is brought to life by the Theatre Royal’s Young Company this Autumn.

The Prisoner of Zenda

Adapted from the classic adventure novel by Antony Hope, and staged with the Common ground trademarks of theatrical inventiveness and original live music.

Rudolph Rassendyll is 29, and he’s done very little with his life. His fascination with the Ruritanian royal family (to which he is dubiously related after a scandalous affair involving his grandmother) impels him to visit Ruritania on the eve of the new king’s coronation. While walking in the forests around Zenda, he meets the king and his entourage. The king and he are physically identical and what follows as a result of this accident of birth will change Rudolph’s life forever, forcing him to choose between his moral duty and his heart…
