Open your doors for Heritage Open Days

The Heritage Economic and Regeneration Trust (HEART) is calling for new venues and organisations to take part in this year’s Heritage Open Days, which runs 12th to 15th September 2013.

Heritage Open Days (HODs) is England’s largest and most popular voluntary cultural event, celebrating the country’s fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to events and interesting properties that are usually closed to the public or normally charge for admission. The annual programme includes open buildings, guided tours, exhibitions, talks, family activities, music recitals and re-enactments.

HEART would love to hear from venues and organisations who haven’t taken part before, or from anyone with an idea for an event that they would like to organise to form part of HODs. In particular, the heritage trust is keen to have more child-friendly events as part of the celebrations.

New events for 2013 include a concert celebrating the musical heritage of Norwich and Norfolk in St Stephen’s Church; an exhibition of etchings by the Norwich School of artists in the City Bookshop; Remembering and Recording Norfolk, a tour of the Norfolk Heritage Centre where visitors are encouraged to bring their own photos and souvenirs; and ‘A Monk’s Life’ at St Benet’s abbey in Horning, which includes re-enactors and handling sessions.

Sophie Cabot, Engagement Manager at Norwich HEART said: “HODs is the annual showcase for heritage in Norfolk. If you are proud of a place or a project this is the time to shout about it and make sure everyone has the chance to see and appreciate your personal ‘best bit’ of the county’s rich and varied heritage.”

If you are interested in organising an event or would like to find out more, please contact Sophie Cabot by emailing [email protected], calling 01603 305575 or writing to Sophie Cabot, Norwich HEART, The Guildhall, Gaol Hill, Norwich NR2 1JS. Events must be free to attend but all necessary insurance, and full publicity will be provided by Heritage Open Days. To guarantee inclusion of your event, please contact HEART by 24th May 2013.

The HODs brochure and public booking for events will be available from 5th August – see www.heritagecity.org/hods for more information.

About Heritage Open Days

Heritage Open Days was established in 1994 as England’s contribution to European Heritage Days (EHD), The Council of Europe created European Heritage Days to bring people closer to their cultural heritage by throwing open the doors to historic monuments and buildings – preferably those which are usually either closed or are only partly accessible to the general public.

To ensure that no-one is excluded from enjoying the benefits of the event, the Council of Europe made it a key requirement that access to all properties taking part in EHD should be offered free of charge. European Heritage Days are held annually in September in 50 countries.

The UK is represented by The Heritage Open Days National Partnership, Open House London, Doors Open Days in Scotland, Open Doors Days in Wales and European Heritage Days in Northern Ireland.
