Seachange Arts, revive their Mardi Gras event this week (Tuesday 28 February) at the Drill House on York Road.
The organisation behind the Out There Festival staged a Mardi Gras event on King Street in 2010 and 2011 and bring the event back as part of their Drill House programme this month.
“Our Mardi Gras is an international celebration with food, family activities and plenty of fun,” says Joe Mackintosh of Seachange. “Mardi Gras is a great French tradition while in Britain it is known Shrove Tuesday or ‘Pancake Day’. We’ll be mixing the ingredients of the two and taking it indoors at The Drill House”
The Drill House’s main hall was recently refurbished thanks to a £1.5 million grant from Arts Council England. The venue throws open its doors for an afternoon of activity to banish the winter and welcome in the spring.
Artist and maker, Claire Antell will be running a creative carnival mask-making workshop to get the Mardi Gras theme off and running.
Mike Imerson from Seachange’s resident circus company, Dizzy O’Dare will be on hand as ‘head chef’ for the return of Total Crepe, a silly pancake race where two teams do battle in an event which mixes cookery, performance and speed.
Young participants from Drillaz, SeaChange’s circus school, will provide a number of circus performances throughout the afternoon and evening, there’ll be fresh-cooked pancakes and live music.
Seachange will also be welcoming in local residents to discuss Up Our Street, a new project aimed and transforming the streetscape of the York Road area. Artist, Rachel Harrison will be on hand to help decorate pots and run willow weaving sessions as well as listen to ideas and answer questions on the project.
Seachange Arts Mardi Gras takes place at The Drill House from 3.30pm on Tuesday 28 February.
Tickets are £2 (£5 family of 4) available on the door or in advance at www.seachangearts.org.uk
