Southwold Colts out to make a point

After losing two of our five Suffolk Plate matches due to a combination of over confidence, injuries and Valentine Day!!! Southwold Colts needed to make their mark on this tournament. Their points difference is now over 150 – which I think says it all! Despite missing three key forwards and two key backs Soutwold were clearly up for making amends for these recent defeats.

Skipper on the day, Jack Frere-Smith, set the tone within a minute of kick-off getting the turn-over which allowed fly-half, Ben Felton, to do a cheeky chip in their 22 which sat up nicely for a grateful Matt Sutton who dotted it down under the posts for the first of his four tries.

Stowmarket then took advantage of the Southwold ‘breeze’ to get a penalty kick. But just a few minutes later another Southwold attack ended in Stowmarket’s 22 where Ben Felton broke on the blindside and touchdown in the corner. Shortly followed by hooker, Sam King’s try under the posts from another determined attack. After another few minutes Matt Sutton ran 50m to pop the ball down under the posts for his second. 20 minutes in 26-3 up.

Stowmarket got two back before half time but another break by Ben Felton and a 50m run by Matt Sutton extended the score to 33-13 and Matt’s Hat trick.

Southwold would take full advantage of the wind throughout the second half. Within a few minutes they were deep in the opposition’s 22 and our prop, Hugo Wells-Baker, powered through a hapless defence and over the line. Within five minutes fullback, James Scarle, ran in a fine try. A couple of minutes later James then found himself the grateful recipient of a pitch perfect training ground backs move which saw him run in, completely unopposed, for his second try.

The game was well and truly won before Ryan Shipley ran in a try on the wing for Southwold and Matt picked up his fourth. But as a mark of their spirit, Stowmarket had the last word with a converted try of their own in the final minutes of the match.

Final score Southwold 64 – 20 Stowmarket

Southwold U16s beat Hadleigh in a tense contest.

It was a nice bright day on the Common with a strong wind blowing straight down the pitch toward the sea. Hadleigh arrived with 15 players for a midday kick off. It was the usual feisty affair with excellent defence shown from both sides. In the first half James Temple on one of his many line breaking runs made his way to within a couple of meters before being felled. This was picked up by Will Binder who had run a great support line and put down for the first try.

Hadleigh then started to put great pressure on the Southwold try line, the defence held them on the line for several minutes before being kicked away for some welcome breathing space. With Southwold taking charge of all the scrums on the day it was from one of these that the Number 8, Jack Thurbon, came off the back to crash through for a try.

The second half was very much the same a very physical end to end game with some great defending by both sides but with Southwold ensuring all their U15s had game time, the tide of the game started to favour Hadleigh and eventually they went over for a try. Southwold gathered themselves and with some tense last few minutes won 12- 5.

Special mention to the ref for the day Tim Passmore on contaning the boys enthusiasm/passion for the Great Game
