The Behn Quartet is a London-based string ensemble, comprised of players from England, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Wales. Their commitment to each other extends far beyond the practise room, which creates highly engaging and emotionally-involved performances. They are named after Aphra Behn, the 17th century playwright and poet, philanthropist of the arts, feminist, spy and political activist. The quartet wanted to take the name of an inspiring and strong female figure and for them, Aphra Behn was the obvious choice.

Selected for the CAVATINA Chamber Music Fellowship at the Royal Academy of Music 2016/7, the quartet combines an intense passion for chamber music with a love of exploring new perspectives across centuries of music.

Imagine a family – one of whom is the 2016 BBC Young Musician of the Year and another had been a category finalist.

The Kanneh-Masons are a family of extraordinary young musicians. Sheku was overall winner of the 2016 BBC Young Musician competition. His sister, Isata, was a category finalist in the 2014 series and has performed widely in the UK and with Elton John in Los Angeles. Braimah, violin, is a member of the Royal Academy Symphony Orchestra, and has performed solo and chamber concerts around the UK. They also came second in Britain’s Got Talent2015.

Sheku Kanneh-Mason is a 17 year old cellist and he won the Young Musician competition to enormous critical acclaim. His playing was described as “electric”. He played the first cello concerto of his favourite composer, Shostakovich.

Sheku and his siblings – there are seven children in the family – are all prodigiously talented!
