Premier Suffolk Artists’ Annual Exhibition Opens 26 February
Suffolk Open Studios announces the launch of its annual Showcase, taking place at the Apex Gallery in Bury St Edmunds.
This year’s show will be opened by Ania Hobson, 2018 Winner of the Young Artist Award, BP Portrait Awards at the National Portrait Gallery.
With over 100 members contributing work across a wide spectrum of 2D and 3D media, the Suffolk Open Studios Annual Showcase marks a highpoint in the artistic calendar and is the premier exhibition for visual artists across the county.
Ania Hobson commented: “I’m very pleased to be opening this year’s Showcase. It’s never easy for artists, particularly younger ones, to establish themselves and the Showcase provides them with a major opportunity to show their work to a wider audience and gain the exposure they deserve.”
Cally James, Suffolk Open Studios Chairperson, commented: “We are delighted to have an artist of Ania Hobson’s international reputation agree to open the Showcase this year. It is a further indication of the growing recognition the exhibition is achieving in the artistic community as the premier venue in which to display your work on a larger stage and have your undoubted talent recognised.”
The Suffolk Open Studios Annual Showcase takes place at The Apex Gallery, Charter Square, Bury St Edmunds, IP33 3FD. It runs from Tuesday 26 Feb to Sunday 31 March 2019; the Apex is open Monday-Saturday 10am-5pm and Sunday 10am-4pm. For more information, visit www.theapex.co.uk/gallery.

As in previous years, Suffolk Open Studios is pleased to support the work of participatory arts charity Suffolk Artlink. A prize draw in support of the charity will take place during the Private view on 26 February.
Suffolk Open Studios members who have not yet submitted work for this year’s Showcase are welcome to apply.

Ania Hobson
Suffolk-born artist Ania Hobson recently won the prestigious 2018 Young Artist Award, BP Portrait Awards, at the National Portrait Gallery. Her painting will be on tour in the UK for a year and is currently on display at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery until March 2019.
Ania’s paintings hang around the world and she has work on permanent display at the Gallery at Snape Maltings and Thompson’s Gallery, Aldeburgh. She has exhibited self-portraits at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters’ Annual Exhibition (2016, 2018), the Society of Women Artists at the Mall Galleries in London (2015) and the Royal Society of British Artists.
Ania specialises in portrait paintings, working primarily in oils. Where possible, she works from life to capture the movement and characteristics of her subjects: her interpretation is life-like and traditional, yet with a contemporary feel.

Cally James
(Lawshall, Bury St Edmunds – Suffolk Open Studios Chairperson)
Cally James is a practising Ceramics artist and Art teacher. She works primarily in clay and Plaster of Paris, but enjoys experimenting with other mediums such as painting in acrylic and watercolour. Her influences are varied but centre around artists who make particular reference to society, such as Grayson Perry.
Having started her working life originally as a chef, she became Chairperson of Suffolk Open Studios in 2017. She recently completed her MA in Fine Art at the University of Suffolk in Ipswich.

Lucy Perry
(Bury St Edmunds)
Bury-based painter and printmaker, celebrating nature, colour and pattern and specialising in landscape, still life and abstracted imagery.
Lucy Perry works in acrylic on canvas and board, producing both small studies and large scale paintings which explore landscape and natural forms. Colour and pattern are key elements. Imagery celebrates the spaces around us and the objects we live with – from treasures collected in the garden to nature’s wild offerings. These ideas are also explored through printmaking in both screen prints and lino cuts. As well as a practising artist, Lucy is a qualified art teacher.

Allan Williams
(Woodbridge)
Woodbridge-based artist and illustrator Allan Williams creates artwork which engages the viewer at different levels: visual, emotional and linguistic. Much of his work is figurative, highly detailed and features illusionism or ‘trompe l’oeil’ effects; other paintings are acutely observed renditions of nature.
Allan works mainly in acrylic or oils on canvas, watercolour and acrylic on paper, and digital prints from computer-generated images. He also reproduces many of his paintings as limited edition giclée prints.

Patricia Theodorou
(Bungay)
I paint mainly en plein air and have a love of cityscapes, people and places, both home and abroad – mainly London, Norwich, Paris and Rome. I work mainly in oil, pastels and oil pastels.
The brilliant light and blues skies of Southern Italy and Greece inspire me and with each work I can recall the time of day, temperature and sounds of the occasion; whether sunshine or twilight, intense heat or the cool of the evening, the sound of cicadas or the clink of glasses in a restaurant.

Nina Roffey
(Beccles)
Nina has exhibited in a range of group shows and solo exhibitions across Suffolk, Norfolk and Staffordshire.
A previous participant in the Gainsborough Drawing touring exhibition and Norwich Festival, she has painted since her teens before moving on to collage and boxed found objects, as well as sculptural assemblages and – more recently – collections of curiosities and more sculptural pieces made from found wood. She holds a BA in Fine Art from Stoke-on-Trent.

Suffolk Open Studios background
Run by volunteers, Suffolk Open Studios is open to all Suffolk visual artists and galleries regardless of the media in which they work. Its aim is to celebrate the outstanding and diverse talent of Suffolk-based artists. It welcomes member applications from all artists and galleries based or with studios in Suffolk.
Members open their studios free of charge to the public 11am-5pm over the first five weekends of June, choosing to open on as many as they wish. Many join together to form their own local artists’ “trails”; anyone unable to include their own studio can still take part by renting space with other artists and forming their own artists’ “hub”.

Suffolk Artlink develops and delivers inclusive arts programmes in communities which bring skills, support networks, confidence and joy to people in the East. Its creative projects aim to help people transform their lives through the arts, and are delivered in places including community centres, hospitals and hospices, residential homes, refuges and schools.
