New Suffolk arts course for adults with learning disabilities

Suffolk Artlink are calling for students for an exciting new arts course for adults with learning disabilities starting in three locations across Suffolk next month.

In the next of the their successful JumpstART courses in Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds and Lowestoft, the arts charity will be exploring the Protest Arts movement.

During the 15-week long arts programme, students will enjoy sessions in drama, graffiti, fashion, film, poetry and music at the following locations:

Ipswich: Every Wednesday, 10 – 4pm, starting from 6th September, at Avenues Theatre, Gippeswyk Hall, Gippeswyk Avenue, Ipswich, IP2 9AF

Bury St Edmunds: Every Tuesday, 10 – 4pm, starting from 5th September, at The Centre, St John St, Bury St Edmunds, IP33 1SN

Lowestoft: Every Thursday, 10 – 4pm, starting from 7th September, at The Bethel Centre, Battery Green Rd, Lowestoft NR32 1DE

Areas covered will include protest theatre and performance art, protest poster art and protest fashion. The course will culminate in a public showcase of the students’ work, inspired by their own ideas.

Fran Speight, Suffolk Artlink Project Development Officer, said: “We are looking forward to giving students the opportunity to learn about how art can create change.  The course will encourage them to explore and express their views creatively using artforms widely used within the protest arts movement.

“Through artist-led sessions, trips to cultural venues and a final public celebration of their work, students have the opportunity to learn new creative and life skills, gain confidence and build friendships. ”

Richard, a student on a previous JumpstART course, said: “The part I liked is talking about the issues we’ve had in our lives – nobody usually talks about disability but we talked about it and that was important.”

Harvey, a regular JumpstART student, added: “With Suffolk Artlink, I feel like I’ve got so much to look forward to and lots to say.”

The full 15-week protest arts course will cost: £225 (£15 per session).
