Suffolk Artlink 743JumpstART!

In Bury St Edmunds, JumpstARTers have had some amazing workshops with Caitlin Howells creating giant willow heads for Carnival Arts course. We had a workshop of drumming – students had the chance to create music on dundun and djembe drums with tutor Mark, and last week we were working with Chris Draude, the clown, to learn some circus and performance skills.

JumpstART! Students have a month long exhibition of their portraits at the Apex in Bury St Edmunds so do come and visit. Monsterland by Ruth Williams is on display alongside charcoal and painted portraits by students from Bury St Edmunds and Lowestoft.

Things are getting very busy in Lowestoft with some amazing artwork being created, following an inspiring trip to Africa Alive. During the trip the students were able to focus on the animals that interested them the most.

Students took photographs and sketches for future reference and decided which animal mask they would like to build. It was a great day out (really sunny and warm for Lowestoft) and the whole group appreciated getting out of the ‘office’ for the day!

Students are now making large armatures out of chicken wire which they have started to paper mache. We did have a break from this over Easter when we had a lively drumming session run by Mark, who introduced the students to some rhythmical African beats. This tied in well to our Carnival Theme – and definitely woke us all up.

Clown Round

It has been a great month for Clown Round. Suffolk Artlink has secured funding from the Shelly Fund – Norfolk Community Foundation for 8 sessions across Norfolk in the coming months! As well as accepting this generous offer from Norfolk Community Foundation, the Clown Doctors have been having all sorts of fun at the first of their Play Days for 2016, at the Co-op Education Centre in Ipswich.

At the Play Day we lucky enough to invite Louise Thrower, Specialist Occupational Therapist from Next Generation Therapy to come along and share her knowledge of sensory work with our Clown Doctors to help enrich their approach to working with children and young people across the region.

As well as sharing skills and silliness with the other Clown Doctors, Dr Misschief and Dr Daydream have been preparing themselves for their first Clown Round sessions at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital this year. Keep an eye out on the Jenny Linda and Buxton Wards for their cheeky faces in April.

Suffolk at Play

The EDGE conference was developed by the City of Edinburgh Council to share good practice in library services, to which end it makes awards across a number of categories and has become a highly regarded international annual event. We’re thrilled to report that this year, the ‘Social – involving communities and making a difference’ Award went to Stradbroke Village Library, home to the library, the local Post Office – and a very good café where the Suffolk at Play Cube will be exhibited for the rest of this month.

Our congratulations to Manager, Maureen John, and our thanks to her for all the support she has offered this project – and Suffolk Artlink in general – over the years.

We have now finished the sessions in Stowmarket, and are busy editing the animations created by students from Cedars Park Community Primary School.

Last week, we visited Cedrus House to record some of the residents and staff about their involvement in the project. When we asked the Activities Officer what she thought the residents had got out of the project, she said,

“It was lovely, seeing how the residents’ faces just lit up when the children arrived – it made them so happy to be part of it all.”

Talking Care:

The Talking Care sessions have now come to an end, we want to say a huge thank you to all the carers who took part and shared their stories and experiences with us. We are continuing to work with Suffolk County Council to process this information and to develop resources for new carers.

Rock Up

What a night! What a gig! What a performance!

At the end of March, the Coolville Band took part in the Amplifier gig at the Cut Arts Centre in Halesworth.

This was Coolville’s first public performance, and, as often happens in the heady world of rock and pop, things didn’t go quite as planned. The band went up on stage, the drummer counted them in, the guitars took up the base line and… the power to the keyboard failed. No keyboard, no vocals – but the band played on, as Matt tried in vain to fix the problem.

The audience was amazing, realising that there was a technical failure, and applauded loudly as the band brought the song to a close.

But that applause was nothing when Coolville came back to the stage later that evening, played the song again – and absolutely nailed it.

They were brilliant, and that’s not just my opinion. Members of the audience kept coming up and congratulating them on their performance. Members of the other bands were also really complimentary and the parents and friends who had come along to support them agreed that they were totally fantastic. Now, the only question they want answered is – ‘when can we do it again?’

Bridge Project

Back in the middle of March illustrative artist Kasia Posen led the second artist day at Grove Primary School, Lowestoft. Working with the year 6 and one of the school’s teachers, Vicki McDonald, they looked at building storyboards based on the extraordinary 3d viking characters they have been making since the first artist led day.

Suffolk Artlink 9d
Kasia introduced the group to lots of new concepts based around storyboarding and script writing relating to their characters, culminating in the group planning a legacy for the project.

The year 6 wish to leave a plinth much like a miniature ‘Fourth Plinth’ at Trafalgar Square, for the exhibition of chosen works and achievements from the school. This legacy will be passed onto the new year 6 at the beginning of each academic year, to manage, curate and decide what should be displayed on a rotating basis. Keep your eyes peeled for the grand opening on the 17th May.

In partnership with the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), Pro Corda/Leiston Abbey is offering – over the next 12 months – a sustained work experience programme for 16 – 25 year olds from Suffolk with additional needs.

I’ve attached a pdf flyer with more information about this “Next Step” scheme, and so that you can share with colleagues. The important things to stress about “Next Step” are:

  • It offers residential placements in the unique environment and facilities of Leiston Abbey.
  • The scheme is absolutely free to all students taking part. All tuition, pastoral carer, and full board and lodging at the Abbey is covered.
  • The scheme uses the power of performing arts to boost confidence and help prepare young people with additional needs for work and career opportunity, and to help get them ready for interviews and similar.
  • The first 4 days of each 5 day residential placement make use of all the aspects of Leiston Abbey as an arts organization, residential course provider, and heritage site. Participants will experience everything from stage performance to arts admin, catering skills to site management.
  • On the 5th day of each placement participants will go into a local business (our partner businesses include Waitrose and Leiston Football Club) to get a contrasting day’s experience accompanied by Pro Corda staff.
  • Participants will receive informal tutorial sessions with Pro Corda’s specialist staff to help consolidate all the skills they develop during their week, and to help prepare them for further and sustained work opportunity.

Thanks to the Eastern Region LEP this is a free opportunity for those who can benefit the most. If you have any students who you feel would like to participate in this, You can contact them by email [email protected] or via the Pro Corda office on 01728 831354
