Suffolk Artlink

Creative Company
Suffolk Artlink’s art group for carers and cared for at Smiths Row Gallery in Bury St Edmunds have been meeting weekly. They have been taking part in felting, painting and Mosaic workshops. The group are almost at the end of their artist-led sessions but will be continuing to meet and work together with the support of our Creative Volunteer.

JumpstART
Students for the JumpstART Lowestoft project celebrated the end of their module in Illustration and Character Art with an amazing interactive exhibition held at the Bethel Centre in Lowestoft.

The students created an exhibition with the support from tutors Joel Millerchip and John Williams.

The exhibition displayed their 3D superheroes (made from supersculpy) in a miniature box set which was then transformed into a carnival funfair game for visitors to play.

It was great to see so much interaction between the audience and the students – who enjoyed explaining the games and about how they created their superheroes.

The Lowestoft Journal who covered the event were impressed by the standard of work and how much thought had been put into the exhibition.

The exhibition has been tailored down and is now on display at the Lowestoft Library until Thursday 24th.

The next module for both JumpstART Bury St Edmunds and JumpstART Lowestoft is Textiles, Pattern and Printing. JumpstART’s explore days are 24th and 31st July at the Bethel Centre, Battery Road Green in Lowestoft 22nd July and 12th August at the St Johns Centre, St Johns Street in Bury St Edmunds.

Community Musicians and Music Hubs Training Day
‘Wonderful’, ‘valuable’, ‘brilliant’ are just a few of the comments made by community musicians attending the training day run by Suffolk Artlink on 25th June.

The event, presented as part of the Phonic music inclusion project, brought together local musicians with representatives of the County Music Education Service and Music Hub, including Marion Hinds, the deputy head of service, and Simon Snowden, the area manager (North).

Xenia Horne, Director of Sound Sense and a musician who has worked on several Suffolk Artlink projects, conducted an ‘insightful’ conversation between delegates and the speakers, as we learned more about the role of the Music Hub in Suffolk, and how we might work together to enhance music provision for children and young people in the county.

Talking about the Music Hub, one delegate wrote – ‘I didn’t really get it before – I didn’t really have any idea what it was & hadn’t thought about it.’ By the end of the morning, 93% of delegates said they had a clearer idea of what the Music Hub does; one delegate wrote ‘[Today has been] useful for making contact with people and for raising my understanding of issues.’

And the Music Hub representatives were also given food for thought – as one said afterwards  ‘It was very useful to come and share and listen – and to come away with a few thoughts to progress.’

Those thoughts include the possibility of extending some of their CPD programme to make it available to community musicians and how the Music Hub Network meetings might be offered in various localities, to ‘encourage joined-up conversation’.

Culture Club
Singing workshops will be taking place with the Gainsborough Library Top Time group this month. Plans are also being put into place to start the art group at the library up again with artist-led sessions, beginning with watercolour workshops.

We also have just had booklets printed from when members from the 4 Ever Young Men’s Group, Claydon participated in a Suffolk Artlink photography and reminiscence project.

Photographer Albert Robb led the group through a series of photography workshops sharing camera skills. The group also worked with reminiscence worker Julie Heathcote exchanging memories and stories. The group visited The Ipswich Transport Museum as part of the project. The project culminated in a local photography exhibition by the 4 ever young Men’s Group.

Memories and photographs taken by the group are recorded in a booklet. If you would like to receive a copy of the booklet please contact Suffolk Artlink or view it here.

Clown Round
Clown Doctors Dr Misschief, Dr Haystack and Dr Fidget are preparing to pack their bags and hang up their red noses as they approach the end of the summer term on the regions children’s wards. The Clown Round post boxes placed on the wards have started to receive brilliant Clown Doctor designs by the children.

The bags will not stay packed for too long as the Clown Doctors have been invited to EACH (East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices) Quidenham and The Treehouse later this month.

The Treehouse have created a film titled Happy which shares the wonderful work of the hospice. Clown Round’s Dr Fidget and Dr Misschief managed to also make an appearanceon the film. The film can viewed below:
